SF Lady Dons tame T-wolves Bryan Redd STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons honored and said good bye to two outstanding seniors, Katelyn Elliott and Jessie Anderson, with a 17 point victory against visiting Timpanogos Wednesday, Feb. 11. Elliott and Anderson demonstrated leadership, defensive prowess and class in leading this 2008-09 team. The Dons executed the offense to perfection in the first quarter. SF benefited from steals and quick outlet passes off defensive rebounding to run their fast break. The T-wolves showed frustration against the Dons' half court trap. Anderson and Brynlie Nielsen converted steals into points and the Dons led 17-10 after the first quarter. The T-wolves were shut down in the paint in the second quarter. The Lady Dons maintained a balanced scoring attack, scoring 13 points. SF had six rebounds, while Erin Redd denied Timpanogos' Baily from scoring in the post, with three blocked shots. The Lady Dons widened the lead at halftime 30-21. The Dons were outscored 17-14 in the third quarter. The T-wolves' outside shots started to drop. The Lady Dons did not panic, relying on their defense to stop the Timp offense. Jessie Anderson scored seven third-quarter points and dished out three assists to lead her team to a 44-38 lead at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter demonstrated SF chemistry and strength. The Dons scored 22 points, rebounded with reckless abandon, and swatted shots — Redd four, Nielsen one — as they held the T-Wolves to 11 fourth quarter points. The Lady Dons sent the seniors out in style with a convincing 66—49 victory. "The girls moved the ball well offensively; they played solid team ball. Brynlie stepped up, hitting some big threes, while Erin had some sweet steals and blocked shots controlling the paint, and Jessie played lock-down defense. Collectively, the team really showed some heart tonight. The team came out tonight, played hard, and had fun," said Coach Aubrey Johnson. The Dons had a balanced scoring attack, led by Brynlie Nielsen with 24, Erin Redd 18, Jessie Anderson 11, Shae Johnson 11, Jen Huntsman 2 and Hailegh Emerine 2. The Dons had 28 rebounds, 14 assists, 12 steals and 9 blocked shots. LAYUP: Shae Johnson gets two of her 11 points against the T-wolves. " Friday the 13th proved to be a lucky day for the Salem Hills Skyhawks as they hosted Juan Diego for their final regular season game. Salem used a strong second half to soar over the Soaring Eagles with a 65-51 victory. The win gives Salem a share of the Region 8 title. In the first period it was a tug-o-war as both teams traded baskets. With Juan Diego up by two and just seconds remaining on the clock, senior Dustin Belliston came up with a steal and drove it down for a gametying lay-up. The lay-up seemed to ignite a spark as the Skyhawks outscored Juan Diego 14—8 in the second, earning a 29-23 lead going into the half. Big man Riley Hanks and Dustin Belliston led the charge for their team in the first half, where Hanks boasted nine points and Belliston came away with six. The second half was the same story as Salem came out hot at the hoop, stretching the lead to 35-25 in the third. With six minutes remaining on the board, the Skyhawks kept their momentum going as Riley Hanks got the ball down low and put in the bucket for two, picked up the foul and connected on the free throw, giving Salem their biggest lead of the game at 40-27. Senior Gus Dewey, who had been relatively quiet all night, came out on Salem's first possession of the fourth and hit a trey to bump the lead back up to 13. From there Dewey made plenty of noise, scoring an impressive 10 points in the fourth quarter and the last bucket of the night for the Skyhawks. Hanks led the scoring with 20 points, while Dewey finished with 12. Salem ended the season with a 13-8 record overall and 8-2 in region play.
