Liz is a graduate of Spanish Fork High School and has been attending Utah State University in Logan with plans to enter the nursing program in the fall. Togo is a small country on the west coast of Africa. Liz is living with a host family in the countries capital city of Lome. She is work- ing in an orphanage helping to care for and teach 4 and 3 year olds. She also travels to remote villages where the people live in mud huts with no modern conveniences. In these villages she helps out with what ever the native people need. In a recent email she told family and friends, "I expected to come here and see devastating poverty, and I have definitely seen poverty, but the people are happy! They grow their own food and live in little shacks and love God. They don't have the stresses of work or bills or debt. They don't have the American attitude of always wanting bigger, better and more." On an outing she was able to go to a house where slaves were held waiting to be taken to America. The slaves were kept in small spaces beneath the floor boards where they were forced to crouch for days in spaces too. short to stand up. Liz will be serving the people of Togo until the end of March and is already planning to go back after she gets her nursing degree to help set up a medical Elizabeth Lambourne clinic at the orphanage. Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Three Queens' Hilarie Orman STAFF WRITER If the name of the concert game is Three of a Kind, what are the hidden themes for each of the four "hands" that the Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra plays for its current conceit season? The Three Jacks were composers named Jacques, Giovanni, and Johann, and the Three Kings were represented by music with the Christmas Magi in their themes. What will Maestro Ben Winkler come up with to fulfill the title of the Three Queens concert? You will have to journey to one of the Nebo Philharmonic performances this month to find out Because this month marks the 200th birthday of Felix Mendelssohn, you can expect to hear the famous "Wedding March" with the rousing crescendos that stir the audience and players alike. But would you expect a donkey to appear in another piece? And where is the queen? In December 2008, Spanish Fork City received two new fire trucks. Both are Pierce 1500 GPM Pumper trucks. Spanish Fork City Council approved the budget for our two new trucks in early 2008. One of the trucks is replacing the 1983 Pumper and the other is a new addition to Spanish Fork's ever-growing volunteer fire department. Maestro Winkler tells his musicians that "if you cannot make the audience sway to the beat of a Viennese waltz, then you will never be able to stir them at all," so you will not be surprised to hear Strauss waltzes that set the orchestra itself in motion. Did Strauss compose for a queen? Find out on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Nephi Civic Center or on Feb. 27, 2009 at the American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork. Mozart's 253rd birthday just passed, and you may remember his "Magic Flute" opera, but did you know about its relationship to politics of his day and how the tonal center changes reflect a dialogue between two powerful forces? And is there a queen somewhere? The orchestra invites you to find all the queens at their performances this month. The concerts start at 8 p.m., last for one hour, and tickets are available at the door, $5 for adults, $3 for children, and $ 15 for a family pass. In the spring the orchestra plays its final hand of the season, "Three Deuces." See their website, www. nebophil.org, for more information. One reason Spanish Fork can afford these new vehicles is because it remains one of very few cities in the state of Utah that staffs, from the local population, full volunteer fire and EMS crews. "It's because we love our community and want to give back to a city that has given so much to us," said volunteer firefighter Amy Baum / Spanish Fork News NEW CAR SMELL: The SF Fire Dept. received two new fire trucks that were unveiled Feb. 17 at City Council.
