The Salem Hills High Debate team is no exception. Led by Mr. Doug Welton, the debate team left on Nov. 5 and went to the University of Southern California to debate with students from all across the West. The topic for the weekend was saying we live in a Democratic society, should felons have the right to vote. All attendees competed on Friday and Saturday, and they were given the opportunity to contest each side of the topic three times. Only the finalists moved on to compete on Sunday, and Salem Hills High was represented well with Dallin Jack, Justin Sly, and Ryan Hyatt ad- vancing to the finals. Justin Sly and Ryan Hyatt both placed in the top 16, and Ryan Hyatt received the award for first-place speaker in the Junior-Varsity Lincoln Douglas Division. Dallin Jack stole the show and won second place in the overall competition for the Junior-Varsity Lincoln Douglas Division. "Debate has enabled me to logically tear apart anything anyone says and throw it back in their face. Tour was so great because we all got to practice our skills and see what it was really like to debate against private schools," Jack said. All students in attendance came home exhausted but invigorated by the incredible experience. The debate tour is a another great example of the success that Salem Hills is achieving in every area of academics and the expectations that are being set for future students. Samuel Egbert SHHS Toilet paper, pop cans and newspaper strung and thrown across the school was what greeted SHHS students at the school's first "Bargain Bop" Dance. Sure they expected cheap, but the dance company brought it to a whole new level. Couples were able to get in and get pictures for a steal price of only $10, and the music was provided by a stereo system, no DJ. It was definitely a different dance, but those who attended were quickly sucked into the atmosphere, and some went even as far as to make toilet paper mummies, and do the trash limbo. The bargain bop will remain an interesting twist in the various dances that have occurred at Salem Hills High School. 'Vote for Books' campaign held at SFJH Chris Thompson STAFF W R I T E R Spanish Fork Junior High School librarian, Richard Huff, sponsored a "Vote for Books" campaign in honor of the recent presidential election. During their English classes on Nov. 2, 2008, students were polled and asked to vote for their five favorite books or series. Mr. Huff then collected all of the ballots, tallied the results, and shared the findings during the morning announcements the following day. It was no t surprise that the Twilight series was the number one pick of students while Calvin and Hobbes came in second. Ranking third was the well-loved Dr. Seuss books, and Harry Potter and Fablehaven finished fourth and fifth respectively.
