Show jjfestyles Covering what matters most A4 • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2008 Seatbelts "Click it or Ticker and "Buckle Up" are slogans that frequent, the halls of Spanish Fork High school. However catchy they might be, the slogans apparently aren't hitting home with Spanish Fork teens. A 2007 seat belt observation, conducted by Utah County Health Department, showed only 60 percent of Spanish Fork teens buckled their seat belts. Spanish Fork parents shared their stories about the importance of having their teens buckle up. Ron. a Spanish Fork parent, stated that . seat belts saved his life and the lives of his family when he was nine. His mother was driving with Ron's siblings in the car, when a drunk driver hit the car head on. Seat belts secured the children and Ron's mother in the car and prevented further injuries. Another. Spanish Fork teen had a similar story when her car was hit and rolled completely over. Her seat belt prevented her from being thrown from the car. "If 1 wasn't wearing my seat belt,'1 she said, "I would have been flung from my seat and my own car would have rolled over me." Adults and teenagers need to develop the habit o{ wearing a seat belt. The best way to develop this habit is to start now. Drivers should set a ..good example by buckling-up every time they get in the car. Also, make sure all of your passengers are buckled up as well. "Parents should teach their children and teens to buckle up every time they are in the car," said Andrea Miller, Utah County Health Department injury prevention coordinator. "Make seat belts a priority in your carl It will save your life, and the lives of your family,",she said. Teenagers cause more than three times as many crashes as the average adult driver. According to the Centers for Disease Control, young people aged 15 - 24 make up 14 percent of the US population. However, they are responsible for 30 percent of the total cost of motor vehicle accidents across the country. Nationwide, motor Vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in young people. "The best way to reduce the risk of being injured in a car crash is to wear a seat belt," said Miller. "It only takes three seconds to buckle up - and those three seconds could save your life. Seat belts keep the driver and passengers from being ejected from the car. They increase your chance of survival in a crash."
