Chad Vest / Spanish Fork News STILL GOING: Travis Still takes off on a kick return against Timpanogos. Dons rout T-wolves Chad Vest STAFF WRITER The Spanish Fork Dons (3-3 overall, 1 -0 in region) went on the road again for their fourth consecutive away game (already six this season) by taking on the Timpanogos Timberwolves in Orem. Both teams started with some good defensive play, but midway thru the first quarter, everything started to click for the red and gray. Lewis found his magic touch, the speedy Randolph bedazzled the defense, talented receivers snagged every bail in sight, and the defense was unforgiving. The near-perfect first half by the Dons, with several plays worthy of any highlight reel, led to a comfortable 28-0 lead. Even though Timpanogos made some adjustments at the half, it did not matter. The red and gray defense continued riding that momentum wave captured early in the game by Lewis and Company to a convincing 34—7 region win. The Mighty Dons found minimal success until the senior signal caller tossed a perfect ball to speedy Chase Loftin midway thru the first. Loftin outran his defender and caught it in stride for a 63yard catch-and-run score to go up 7-0. After an impressive defensive series, Spanish got the ball back inside its own 30, where Trevor Randolph ripped off a 45yard run on the first play from scrimmage. The shifty back broke a couple of tackles before slipping through seven more with jaw-dropping jukes which looked as if he was toying with each defender. This amazing run led to another score as Lewis hooked up with BYU-bound TE Richard Wilson for a 14yard touchdown strike to give the Dons a 14-0 lead. After the ensuing kickoff, the T-Wolf QB hoped to mirror Lewis' style of play. But his first play from scrimmage was a pass that found a white jersey in SF linebacker Jed Alvey, which set up the Dons' next score. Three plays later and SF was in business again. This time, Lewis rolled right before lofting a 35yard ball in the direction of two T-Wolves. One of them camped under the ball for an easy interception . However, TE/WR Jordunn Mattinson came flying in from behind to save the pick. The junior big man leaped high and reached over the head of the defender to make an unreal basket-catch by stealing the ball away for a 25-yard touchdown reception. At the six minute mark in the second quarter, Spanish led 21-0. Timpanogos then sustained a drive and was looking to get on the board inside the SF 30-yardline, but the Don defense had other ideas. The TWolf QB dropped back to pass, but was sandwiched by two bruisers in Tevita Vaitohi and Uili Makai. This crushing hit caused a fumble which the 6'0 220 lb. Makai picked up and raced 70 yards untouched for yet another score. With three minutes remaining, Chet Harmer made it 28-0 with his fourth consecutive PAT, to give SF a near perfect first half of play. Jed Alvey made a couple of strong runs in the third, but the T-Wolves managed to hold Breck in check. Their resolved determination to perform better on defense only mirrored the effort given by their counterpart. The SF defense, led by Vaitohi, was nothing short of stellar as they continued to force three-and-outs with excellent pursuit on the opposing backfield. In the second half, Lewis made some great reads on the defense to pick up first downs and keep the chains moving. After several first half highlights, SF had one left in the bag. Lewis rolled right and threw a 40-yard pass on the run to Travis Still. The sophomore laid out his body and hauled in the pigskin just before hitting the turf for another spectacular grab. This play led to another fine run by Randolph where he slipped a few tackles for a 14-yard TD run. With five minutes left, SF inserted their JV squad and they didn't disappoint. Timp's varsity squad only got on the board in the waning seconds.
