There will be activities throughout the day, including self defense instruction, weapons demonstrations, general martial art demonstrations , drawings, the opportunity to break a board and other exciting events. Maple Mountain Martial Arts has been in business for over 11 years in the Spanish Fork Area. The new studio will offer a pro shop where they will sell martial arts supplies and health items. Maple Mountain currently has 60 students enrolled, but more students enroll every year. They offer programs for all ages, starting with Little Dragons, for children ages 5-7, and regular classes for adults and all ages. Kelly, who is a 3rd Don black belt, and his son Tyler, a 1st Don Black Belt, began training in 1990. "My purpose for training back then was to spend quality time with him," said Kelly. "I have three other children who are black belts. We are a very committed martial arts family because of the values and skills that martial arts teaches." Joe's other children, Mallory and Jace, also teach, along with other professionally trained instructors. Most of the instructors have been with Maple Mountain for more than five years. They provide at least two black belt instructors for every class. DUP twilight Cainp^ Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News READY TO TEACH: Maple Mountain Martial Arts instructors are all black belts. Maple Mountain teaches an art called Kyuki-do, which is a Korean martial art that integrates the punches and kicks of Tae Kwon Do, the throws and joint manipulations of Judo and Hapkido and the ground fighting skills of Jujitsu. They also teach students to use weapons at higher ranks. "Our art is a true integrated art that teaches all aspects of self defense, through our curriculum," said Kelly. Maple Mountain is a traditional martial arts studio. The emphasis is not on competition, but on personal skill and development. "Respect is the core value of what we are teaching our students," said Kelly, "We teach values that go far beyond the kicking and punching. We believe in developing our students physically, mentally and spiritually." Maple Mountain sponsors a kick-a-thon each year. The studio has raised over $18,000, and has donated this money to the Nebo Schools Foundation. The money goes to classrooms and needy students in the Nebo School District, Regan Academy and the American Leadership Academy. "We believe in giving back to the community and this is one of the important values that we teach at our school," said Kelly. •Custom Homes 'Additions •Finishing Basements Peterson joins Aspen Dermatology Aspen Dermatology is pleased to announce the recent addition of Chad Peterson, D.O., to their medical staff of board certified dermatologists.
