Show - N E W S Spanish Fork A6 • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2008 Covering what matters most SF Theatre SF News ribbon cutting Mareen Robinson SFCT For over 25 years, the Spanish Fork Community Theater has been producing a musical each summer as part of Fiesta Days. Adam Cannon was the director for "Oklahoma," the SFCT 2008 production. "The productions bene* fit the community because there is so much negativity and objectionable material on TV and even the internet, that having the theater is a wonderful outlet," said Cannon. "It is more interactive because the audience becomes involved and caught up in the excitement of the play; they clap, they cheer, they laugh, and sometimes cry, which motivates the actors to give even more of themselves." Cannon said one example of that is in the play, "The Music Man," when the boys' band begins to play for the first time. They are just awful. But one mother £tands up and proudly yells, "That's my Tommy!" This is the emotion that stirs families when they come to see their children, their parents, and their neighbors participate in community theater. "Directing people is a lot like sports coaching. I have to see where their talents lie and help them to see that they can do even better. Sometimes I use visualization exercises or let them watch someone else do it. But I encourage them to round out the characterization for Trieste Bills / Spanish Fork News GRAND OPENING: On Thursday, Sept. 4, we held our official grand opening and ribbon cutting at the new offices of The Spanish Fork News, 42 East 300 North, Spanish Fork. Business of the month SERVICE WITH A SMILE: CleggAuto Repair is the Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for September. Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News themselves. The growth and confidence that takes place in the members of the cast is heart-warming. The actors are sometimes amazed at what they can do," said Cannon. Cannon has been doing theater for about 25 years, starting by acting in high school, and then at BYU. He worked backstage when his son was in a play, and found that he had an aptitude for that as well. The backstage tech crew are the ones that are never seen, but the smooth running of the show depends on their skills. Cannon was the stage manager for Payson's production of "Beauty and the Beast." When asked about funny incidents, he said, "Every night there was a different rubber or gummy critter in the soup. Of course, that was never obvious to the audience, and Belle and the Beast were not allowed to break character by reacting to the rat, or beetle in their bowls, but the tech crew certainly had a good time." Spanish Fork Community Theater believes in its relationship with the people of Spanish Fork and will continue to bring creative, professional productions, providing opportunities and valuable experience for our friends and neighbors. Look for our classes in Acting, Costume Making and How to Audition that will be with the Fine Arts Council Adult Arts Classes in January/February 2009.
