The 20-year corrections and law enforcement veteran visited the monthly Women Working for Women luncheon held Monday, Sept. 10 at Prestwich Farm to discuss rape prevention. Larsen, who directs the County's RADkids program, helps educate school groups and others on how to be safe and gives them tools to protect themselves. Statistically, one in five women will be sexually assaulted with a rape happening every nine hours in Utah, according to Larsen. He also said that 90 percent of self-defense is "risk-reducing strategies," which is part of what RADkids teaches. Open House Come see our new offices! Refreshments will be served! They were joined later by another partner, Kevin Buckner, and gradually began to expand their products and their focus. "In the early years, there were many hurdles," Davis says. "But the partners were willing to take calculated risks, make tough decisions, and move the company forward." As they, did, Provo Craft grew from less than 20 employees to over 1,000 employees in the US, with more than 2,000 employees overseas. That single retail store of 1984 has grown into 12 locations in Utah and Idaho. Additionally, the company is a wholesaler, distributor and manufacturer, whose products are carried in craft stores all over the country and worldwide. In 2005, Provo Craft sold part of the company to Sorenson Capital, and James Thornton became the new CEO, with Robert Workman changing positions to become CECO. According to Davis, this partnership with Sorenson Capital, a private equity firm, has been wonderful for the company, and has allowed Provo Craft to become even more diverse. "Jim Thornton, with his background in consumer products, has recruited executive talent from Fortune companies like Intel, Procter and Gamble, Honeywell International Inc., Sears, and Franklin Covey," Davis said. "With such diverse backgrounds on the Provo Craft executive team, the company has been able to extend its consumer products into new arenas such as education and home decor, driving new customers into the crafting industry for their supplies and tools." One example of a product that is useful in many different industries is the Cricut Personal Electronic cutting system. Local scrapbook enthusiasts are surely familiar with the Cricut system, which is an electronic cutter that doesn't need a computer to work — it just has cartridges that plug in to the machine, which then cuts out shapes and letters with the touch of a button. This year, the company released a new product called the Cricut Expression. WTiile the earlier Cricut would cut images up to five and a half inches high, the Cricut Expression allows images from half-an-inch to 23 1/2 inches high or long. As newly-named regional "entrepreneurs of the year," Thornton and Workman are honored to be in such prestigious company. But perhaps even more gratifying is the enthusiasm that their products have generated among consumers a*hd customers. |
