Alzheimer's Walk set for Sept. 15 Amy Baum STAFF WRITER About three years ago, Maren Christensen's grandmother died from complications / due to Alzheimer's. The next year Maren joined the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk committee to help raise money and awareness for this devastating disease. "Alzheimer's doesn't just affect the individual with the disease. It more so affects those caring for their loved one," said Christensen. "The money raised from this walk will go directly to support programs and Alzheimer's research." Alzheimer's affects more than five million Americans, and almost 40,000 Utahns, it does not discriminate against race, sex, gender or culture. This disease is costing our nation more than $ 148 billion. Unless we can find a way to combat this disease, as many as 16 million Americans could have this disease by the year 2050. You can help raise money and join the fight against Alzheimer's by participating in this year's annual Memory Walk, on Sept. 15 at the Eldrecr Senior Center, 270 West 500 North, Provo. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. You can participate as a corporate sponsor, ,a walker, a team leader or volunteer. Their goal for this year is to raise $10,000. This is the only event in Utah County. So please, don your walking shoes, dig into your pocket books and help fight against Alzheimer's disease. If you are not up for the walk, the committee will also accept donations in kind, i.e. prizes for walkers and teams. You can find more information about the walk or sign up as a team leader or single walker at: www.alt. org/memorywalk, then click "find a walk" then search by State, "Utah Memory Walks".
