Skyhawks host Dons On Thursday, Sept. 10, the Lady Dons and Lady Skyhawks met on the soccer pitch for the first time in what may become a long rivalry. The players set the tone of the match before the first whistle by greeting each other and wishing each other luck in an act of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Spanish Fork started the match strong with a few attacks on the Salem Hills goal. Shea Johnson made her presence known with strong, aggressive play, while Courtney Acosta used her speed and skill to attack the defensive wings. After the Skyhawks adjusted to the play of the game, they too began to mount their own attacks on the Spanish Fork goal. Lindsay Stevens was a challenge for the Dons defense to keep marked throughout the match. Both teams battled to a draw at the end of the half, 0-0. Salem Hills had some great opportunities to take the lead, but miscues and good goalkeeping by SF's Lyndsey Healey kept the Skyhawks out of the net. Salem Hills was first to break the deadlock as Margo Brockbank collected a Spanish Fork goal kick and slipped the ball quickly to Lindsay Stevens, who dribbled in front the goal and placed the ball right past the goalkeeper. In the latter part of the second half, Spanish Fork began to mount a couple of consecutive attacks on goal. Salem Hills' midfielder took back that momentum as she served a beautiful through ball to Lindsay Stevens, who took the breakaway opportunity for goal two — earning the 2-0 win for the Skyhawks. Kaylyn Sly and her defense earned their first shutout of the season. "Offensively there were a number of could-havebeen opportunities. Defensively we played a solid match. The ladies did great to earn the shutout — Kan Turner and Bonnie Shallenberger led the defensive stand," said Salem Hills Coach Lee Gillie. The JV match played out similar to the varsity match. Salem Hills won the contest 3-0. Kallee Wilson was assisted by Maddy Eidem on her goal. Margo Brockbank scored twice with assists from Erica Egbert and Kiley Williams. Kaycee Jacklin led the defense and keepers in the shutout. Several local schools traveled to Midway this past Saturday to participate in the Wasatch Invitational cross country meet. Seventeen schools participated on the tough, hilly course used by the Olympic Cross Country ski team. It took the Eagles all of seven minutes and seven seconds to relinquish that lead, and never get it back, as North Sanpete handed the Golden Eagles their fourth loss in as many games this season, 34^14.
