The James, who have been an active part of the Salem community for almost 48 years now, say they felt especially honored to be a part of the Salem Day's parade because, they "Knew that there were so many good people in Salem, and so many others who deserved this honor." Monte and LaVera both attended Spanish Fork High School. I don't know if they still use the term anymore, LaVera said, "but we were high school sweethearts." According to LaVera, she met Monte through a friend of hers and they dated through high school. They were married in a civil ceremony in 1959 and later sealed in the Manti Temple. Monte kept busy over the next 24 years as an equipment manager at Geneva Steel before they closed down. After that, he began work as a custodian for the Nebo School District keeping things in place for his alma matter, Spanish Fork High School. Monte was also a volunteer firefighter and put in over 36 years of dedicated time. Last year, despite being retired, he was named Fireman of the Year and honored for his hard work and dedication. As for LaVera, she has also been a big part of the community over the years. Most residents will recognize her for her time as the city treasurer. She held the position for 30 years before recently retiring. LaVera said, "There was a time when I knew everyone's name and face in Salem."
