Lady Dons off to a 2-1 start Brent Thurgood STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons were forced into working overtime in their opening game of the season against the Titans of Olympus High School in Salt Lake City. The contest lasted 10 innings and nearly three hours; however, senior pitcher Dezlee Roberts was up to the task. Roberts held the titans scoreless for the first seven innings, striking out 10. Roberts finished the game with 15 strikeouts. However what may have been more impressive than her 1.5 strikeouts per inning was the timing in which they happened. The Titans were able to get runners on base in every inning except the third, and with runners on base Dezlee recorded the final out via a strike-out in six of the 10 innings. Offensively, the Dons struggled at the plate, although getting runners on base was not an issue as Lehi edges MM Jessika Hilton STAFF W R I T E R With a four-run lead at the top of the seventh inning, the Lehi Pioneers softball team was almost guaranteed a win. But Maple Mountain made a comeback attempt that almost won them the game. The Pioneers managed to stay alive in the final inning, with a victorious score of 4 - 3 . Despite efforts made by pitchers and batters alike, neither team manage^ to score during the first and second innings. Pitcher Whitney Cook for the Pioneers struck out four players and walked one in the first two innings, and Whitney Roberts for Maple Mountain struck out two players and walked two in the same innings. After walking for first, Ally White scored the first run of the game for Lehi in the third inning, leading the team into a successful fourth inning. Annie Neilson and Carly White both hit singles and scored two more runs for Lehi. Whitney Roberts threw out Lehi's Ariel Zimmerman on third during the fifth inning. After two strike-outs, Maple Mountain ended the fifth inning behind by three runs. After pitching for five innings for the Golden Eagles, Roberts was replaced in the sixth inning by Mariah Peterson. Karlie White scored another point for Lehi, ending the inning with 4-0 for Lehi. After the Pioneer's Kelly-Jo Jenkins threw out Toni Neilson at the bottom of the seventh inning, it seemed as if the inning would turn out just as the others had for Maple Mountain, but with doubles by Haley Mecham and Britley Anderson, the Golden Eagles' luck changed. After being walked, Kayla Ellis advanced to first, loading the bases for the first time during the game. Three unexpected runs later, the bases were once again loaded with Jessie Hartman up to bat for Maple Mountain. With two strikes and two outs on the board, Hartman struck out, leaving the final score at 4-3 for Lehi. the Dons stranded 12 runners in the game. Heading into extra innings and the international tie-breaker, the Dons picked up the game's first run on a single by junior Lindsey Healey. The Titans also scored their runner in the bottom on the eighth, sending the game tied to the ninth. Neither team was able to get a run across in the ninth, despite both teams threatening to break it open. The Olympus threat was erased as Healey threw behind a runner at second to record the inning's first out. In the tenth inning sophomore Sydney Butler pinch hit with two outs and two runners on base. Butler lined a shot to the left center field fence, opening up a 3-1 lead for the Dons. The Titans came right back in the bottom of the tenth, loading the bases, but they were only able to score one run before Roberts slammed the door with a strike-out to end the contest and preserve a 3-2 victory. Spanish Fork did not fare as well in their second game of the season as defense, pitching and baserunning miscues proved too much for them to overcome. Sophomore Kailey Christensen started the game strong as she retired the first five batters in order, with five strike-outs. However, with two outs in the bottom of the second Christensen walked one batter, hit another and gave up a single, which scored a run. Kailey was unable to record an out in the third, due to two Spanish Fork errors and a two Pleasant Grove hits before junior Brooke Kramer came in relief. The Vikings scored four runs in the inning to open up a 5-0 lead. The Dons got a run back in the top of the fourth on singles by Lindsey Healey and Sydney Butler. In the fifth the Dons mounted a comeback as junior Brooke Thurgood got on base to lead off the inning and eventually came around to score on a single by Healey. However, the Dons' threat ended on a ground-out to third base. ; PleasantGrove slammed the door on the Dons, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to cruise to a 7-2 victory. The loss drops the Dons to 1-1 heading into their St. George trip next week. The Lady Dons bounced back Friday in their home opener against the Layton Lancers with a convincing 9-1 victory. Spanish Fork was led offensively by junior Sydney Fryer who picked up three RBIs, scored twice and had two hits, including a home run. Junior Brooke Thurgood also had a good game at the plate going 3-5, with two stolen bases and scoring once. Senior Jenessa Nielsen and junior Lindsey Healey each added two hits, while Dezlee Roberts picked up her second victory of the season going the distance while giving up just two hits and striking out 12 in seven innings of work.
