Cyprus Pirates spoil Skyhawks' opener Namon Bills / The Sentinel AIR TIME: ALA's Adam Davis does some fancy footwork to clear the ball from the ALA side of the field as Maple Mountain's Jared Clawson closes in. ALA, Maple Mountain end game in 0-0 tie Michael Richardson STAFF WRITER ' On Wednesday, March 10, the ALA Eagles battled the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles. Despite the cold, windy conditions, both teams played hard throughout the game. But the hard work on both sides wasn't enough for either team — nobody scored, making it a tie game 0-0. In the first half, both teams struggled to score for several minutes, but most of the action was happening in the middle of the field. Eventually the Golden Eagles brought the ball down and got a shot off, but ALA's goalie blocked it. Both teams continued to take well-aimed shots, but with strong winds, cold temperatures and good goalies on both teams, nobody could score for the rest of the half. In the second half ALA and Maple Mountain both started to take more shots but with no luck. Not far into the second half, the Eagles got the ball and took a shot, which passed the goalie but bounced off the goal. Soon the Golden Eagles had the ball again, and Bradley Clawson took a shot, but just missed the goal. ALA came close to scoring once again when Ben Scott took a shot but missed the goal. Eventually Maple Mountain started to pick up the pace, and soon they had another chance for a goal as Carlos Sulia brought the ball down and took a wellaimed shot. It came close, but once again the ALA goalie blocked the shot. Sulia took his next shot not long after, this time it got past the goalie, but bounced off the goal post. Time expired, leaving the final score a tie 0-0. "We played a great game. I just wish there had been less wind, and more goals," said ALA head coach Steve Solen. Maple Mountain head coach Mike Klauck also shared his thoughts about the game. tl I thought the game went well. We are a very new team and the game gave us the opportunity to see our players in different positions while under game pressure. ALA has a very good team; I was impressed. I thought ALA's goal keepers were exceptional," he said. Salem Hills' soccer began their season with a match versus Cyprus at home, Wednesday, March 10. The Skyhawks were anxious and excited for their first match. The weather was clear but bitter cold with a stiff breeze throughout the match. Salem Hills started hot with Payden Pemberton assisting Jordan Daniels in the first minute of the game. Cyprus' aggressive style of play and the cold weather cooled off the Skyhawks throughout the remainder of the first half. Tannon Bradley played tenaciously on offense and defense to keep the Skyhawks' slim lead intact. The Cyprus Pirates had many opportunities to score. Both Skyler Hughes and Stephen Cowley made some heroic goal-line saves to protect the Sky hawk lead. In the final minute of the first half, Cyprus broke through with the tying goal off a beautiful header from a corner kick. The Pirates took the momentum that they had captured at the end of the first half and ran with it in the second half as they exploited the Skyhawk defense for four goals in the first 20 minutes. "Their midfield played well, and the speed of their forwards punished our defensive miscues. So I had to make a change," said Coach Gillie after the match. Gillie pulled out his defense and dropped the midfield line of his three captains and senior Sam Metz to the backline, and the momentum immediately shifted in favor of the Skyhawks. In the next 15 minutes, the Skyhawks rallied with three goals of their own to get within one goal of the Pirates' lead. All three goals were assisted in a great team effort: Payden Pemberton was assisted by Jordan Daniels, Jerson Martinez was assisted by Kyle Adams, and Mason McAllister was assisted by Sam Metz. Unfortunately, the Skyhawks rally was ended in the final minutes of the match as Cyprus was awarded a penalty kick that they converted to end the match 4-6 in favor of the Pirates. "Cyprus is a good team. We played complacently after our early goal. I am proud of the boys for fighting back and keeping the match competitive. We will learn from this game and move forward," said Coach Gillie. The JV team started cold after sitting through the varsity match. Cyprus took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Early in the second half, freshman Michael Bracetti scored from a corner kick right inside the far post. The Pirates tallied another goal 10 minutes later for a final score of 1-3. "The JV played well for their first match together. We are putting a lot of new faces together. Brendan Dye showed some great poise and footwork on the field today. His hard work is showing out there," said Coach Gillie.
