All the students brought their own material to make a variety of things, including pillow cases, crayon holders, quilts, purses and skirts. Kay Thomas-Perkins, the UCBT coordinator at SFHS, thought this project was especially useful for the students. "If they can learn to operate a sewing machine, they can mend a pair of pants in the future. It teaches them skills for later in life and helps them to be more independent." This was a good opportunity for the UCBT students to gain skills for the future and to have fun. According to Thomas-Perkins, UCBT stands for "You Can't Beat Them". And the sewing skills the students acquired prove her statement is accurate. Courtesy photo UCBT: Pictured above is Tiera Cowden, who made the apron she is wearing for her mom.
