Salem loses heartbreaker to West Jordan Jaguars Alexis Richardson STAFF W R I T E R Thursday, Jan. 7, the Skyhawks girls basketball team took on the West Jordan Jaguars in a hard-fought game for both teams, ending in a heartbreaking loss for the Skyhawks, with an final score of 38-39. The first quarter, the Skyhawks started out strong and kicked ahead. The Jaguars tried hard, but the Skyhawks maintained their lead throughout the first quarter. The Skyhawks not only played well defensively, but kept the points coming on offense. The team worked well together and talked on the court a lot. The first quarter ended with a score of 10-6, with the Skyhawks in the lead. The last bucket was scored by sophomore Hailey Ingram, right at the buzzer. In the second quarter, the Jaguars kicked it in gear and started racking up the points. The Skyhawks tried to keep up their game, and it was neck and neck. The second quarter ended with the Jaguars in the lead 1920. In the third quarter the Skyhawks and Jaguars took turns being in the lead. Jaimee Hodgson, an SHHS junior, put the Skyhawks up by one, but it wasn't enough. The Jaguars made another shot, putting them again in the lead to end the quarter 29-30. The fourth quarter stayed close as each team contin- ued to work hard to take the lead. In the last nine second of the game, the Jaguars had the ball and the lead. The Skyhawks fouled the Jaguars, rebounded the foul shot, and took possession of the ball: They ran the ball down the court, but were not able to make the shot. The Jaguars took possession of the ball and the game ended with a score of 38-39. The Skyhawks played hard and kept up the energy throughout the game. "The girls played hard. I'm proud of them. They have come a long way in this last year and worked hard," said Head Coach Mike Conner. "It was a hard loss but I'm proud of them and they played great." Maple Mountain's Jessie Carlisle defeated Traven Gardiner of Spanish Fork in a physical, low-scoring matchup, 2-0. Carlisle's takedown in the second period gave him the only points in the match. 135 lb. Golden Eagle freshman Logan Kinross dominated this match up against Spanish Fork's Hadlee Gardner, leading his opponent 12-2 before securing the win with a fall 57 seconds into the third period. 140 lb. Spanish Fork's Glade Johnson had to get bandaged up after three blood time outs as he grappled with Jace Kelly of Maple Mountain in a scoreless first period. Kelly got control in the second period, and got the fall with 25 seconds remaining in the second. 145 lb. Spanish Fork's Kaleb Ash worth scored four near falls against Mitch Wilson of Maple Mountain on his way to a 15-0 technical fall decision. 152 lb. Maple Mountain's Brennen Hyatt won by fall 52 seconds into the match against Kayden Worthington. 160 lb. Jordan Argyle of Maple Mountain defeated Spanish Fork's Riley Sutch in a 15-2 major decision. 171 lb. Maple Mountain's Jake Peterson got the fall against Spanish Fork's Axle Robinson 1:40 into the first period. 189 lb. Spanish Fork's Hayden Nelson won by for\ feit 215 lb. Spanish Fork's Cody Duncan won by forfeit. 285 lb. Maple Mountain's Boone Lamborne fought hard and struggled, but was no match for Spanish Fork's Blake Dennin, who won the match by fall 1:56 into the first. |
