Lady Dons on top in Region 4 Brent Thurgood STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork's Lady Dons softball team enjoyed another successful week on the diamond as they picked up three more victories, including two in region play, which pushed their region record to a perfect 4-0. Undoubtedly, the most important win came Tuesday April 7, 2009 as the Lady Dons hosted previously unbeaten and topranked Pleasant Grove. Spanish Fork wasted no time in sending a message to the top-ranked team that they were ready to play as senior Tina Ferguson led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. The Dons picked up four more runs in the bottom of the second with help from two Viking errors and RBI singles by junior Ashley Allred and Ferguson's second hit of the game. In fact, the Dons scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, including a towering home run by senior Lea Adamson, which cleared the outfield fence by nearly 50 feet. Meanwhile, junior Dezlee Roberts kept the Vikings off balance as she allowed only one hit in each of the first three innings and a single run. Pleasant SH Skyhawks demolish Dinos On April 8 the Skyhawks took on Carbon, with two objectives in mind: improve on defense and turn their shots into goals. They accomplished both, getting a 4-0 victory. In the first half, the Skyhawks dominated Carbon, with 20 shots to three. David Clare nearly scored off the opening whistle, but his shot hit the post. The boys hit the post a few times, the crossbar once, and a couple of shots went just wide of the goal. Carbon had no answer for Andres Reyes, who was tearing up thefield. The half ended 0-0. The Skyhawks lined up to begin the second half and a hailstorm struck. They waited under the bleachers for about five minutes, until the hail turned to rain. The boys came out more focused, and, 19 seconds after the whistle, Payden Pemberton found the net after a dropped pass by Morty. Thirteen minutes later, Andres earned a PK and placed a strong shot between the keeper's legs. David Clare finally found the net on a 30-yard shot to the far post, just under the cross bar and just over the keeper's outstretched hands. Neal Pemberton added the fourth goal, sealing off the sweeper, who he had been contesting with all afternoon, and beating the keeper with speed and a nice move. The defense earned their sixth shut out of the season. This is only the second game all season that Carbon has been shutout. Brandon Williams and Nate Jellum split time in the net.
