Show SPANISH FORK 2 • MARCH 2009 Welcome to Scouting Corner 2009 The Spanish Fork News is proud to present the Scouting Corner special section for 2009. Boy Scouts of America has been a long-standing program in our community and provides leadership training, character building and a good deal of fun and adventure to countless local youth. J.C. Henderson started the Scouting Comer years ago as a way to promote scouting in the community and honor those receiving awards. A dedicated scouter, J.C. also served as District Chairman from 1991-1993. Since our inception in 2006, the Spanish Fork News has brought back the Scouting Corner to continue the tradition J.C. started and to honor his memory. The Palmyra District held their annual recognition and awards banquet March 12, 2009 at the Spanish Fork Stake Center. Scout leaders from the various sub-districts of Spanish Fork and Salem were honored. Special awards were also given, including lifesaving awards to Scouts Luke Olsen, Adam Russell and Matthew Huntsman. Thanks to the District Advancement Committee for providing write-ups on the award winners. The district also recently hosted their annual merit badge pow wow, March 7, 14 and 21. Pow wows are an important resource for scouts looking to earn merit badges quickly and qualify for rank advancements. Also included in this section is information on Timberline courses sponsored by the district. Timberline provides leadership training for young scouts. Finally, thanks to our sponsors, featured on the back cover. Without them this section would not be possible. CONTENTS Lifesaving Awards Good Turn Daily £<• Awards of Merit William H. They were going to meet up with the youth group from their LDS Ward. Luke Olsen and Adam Russell were among these youth. Luke and Adam needed to pass off their swim tests before going onto the reservoir in the boats, so Jason was supposed to accompany them by swimming out to the buoy. They all got there about the same time then Luke took off and swam back to shore as fast as he could. Jason said he just needed to rest a minute, so Adam took off for shore too. After Luke got to shore, he thought he heard something, so he turned and saw Jason's arms in the air and just the tip of his head. He yelled and took off to help Jason.
