Baseball teams had to postpone the start of their season, but it still started anyway. On a grander scale, the coming of spring brings a symbolic promise of renewed economic prosperity. It's been a rough winter, economically speaking, and we may still have some storms ahead, but eventually the economy will come around. Things will get better. And just like the promise of spring, that's a guarantee. Obesity legislation, or the corpulent canine caper England is against the law. Well, as a mat- as usually happens with ter of fact, having fat dogs in crash diets, Marie let down her vigil and Rocky and Chubby chubbed up again. Adding to the list of her diabolical misdeeds, Miss Davidson missed three vet appointments to have the dogs weighed. She claims she was caring for her sick mother but the bureaucrats weren't buying it. So. after missing the appointments, the canine obesity police came to the house while Marie was at work and asked Terry Shadbolt, wbvtr also lives'rhere, if they £ould take the dogs and have, them ...weighed. Shadbolt consented and poor distraught Marie has not seen her beloved ani- mals since. She called the SPCA immediately upon arriving home from work that day and was told the dogs weren't coming back. Three days later an inspector came to interview Marie and that's the last contact she's had with them. Marie could actually be prosecuted under the UK's Animal Welfare Act, face a fine, a ban on keeping animals and even jail time. Is it just me; or does thts seem a tad over the top? I'm guessing that Mr. Shadbolt, who is named in the article as Marie's "partner," is probably a few pounds over- weight himself. I mean he's just sitting home on his duff while Marie, who is disabled, works to bring home the dog food and whatever she and Terry are putting away. So it seems to me that the Corpulent Corps should haul Terry's fat fanny to the obesity prison and work him into shape. Then he could exercise the dogs and everyone would be happy.
