Skyhawks defeat Copper Hills Marshall Dunn STAFF WRITER The Lady Skyhawks volleyball team ended their non-conference play with a big win over Copper Hills Thursday, Sept. 17 at home. The Lady Skyhawks relied heavily on their quick, inside hitting to lead them to a 3-1 match victory over the Copper Hills Grizzlies. The Salem volleyball team has improved dramat- ically over the last year after not being able to secure a win last season. The Lady Skyhawks are now undefeated in non-conference matches, with their only losses coming at tournaments . One of the most significant differences noted by Coach Treanor between this year's team and last year's team is the level of experience that they have and knowledge of the system. Namon Bills / T)ie Sentinel A TIME TO KILL: Salem Hills' Stephanie Spencer goes for a spike, above. "[Last year] it was a new coach, a new system; I required different things from them than they were being taught and that made it harder for them," she said. "And I think they just needed a year under them to realize 'Wow we can play up, we can play to the level that Coach wants us to play at,' and just a little experience and maybe a target to look to. And I'm asking a whole more from them this year than I did last year, and they're stepping up, they're really answering that call and I'm proud of them." The first match of the game was handled easily by Salem, who won it 25-18, behind strong setting by Lyndie Sorensen. The second match was won by Copper Hills, who showed a strong and determined team all night. After Salem established an 18-14 lead. Copper Hills took a timeout and came back and tied it at 18-18, which then forced Salem to take a timeout and regroup. However, the Lady Skyhawks were not able to pull it all together, and ended up losing 25-22. After the close loss in match two, Salem came back and won match three, and were once again led by Sorensen, and strong serving by Adrienne Weight. Salem blew a big lead at the end of the match, which brought the score to 22-19, forcing Coach Treanor to take a timeout. Following the timeout, the Lady Skyhawks finished out the match strong, winning 2 5 19. Match four was exciting all the way through, with the lead changing multiple times and the score being tied just as often. Salem had to work hard down the stretch and rely heavily on all six of its players to pull out the win 25-23. The one thing that Coach Treanor stressed was the team's confidence in each other and how much they all trust one another. "We don't have one go-to player that we have to get the ball to in order to win games. In fact, our team does a lot better when we spread the ball around, especially with the deep bench that we have. Before the game our girls got together and told each other 'We got your backs."' Kate Jarman / Tixe Sentinel SERVICE: An ALA player serves against Park City.
