Show Sentinel Guardian of Your Community News Kiwanis WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2009 • A3 Letter to the Editor Foster Huff I am writing in response to an article published in your paper on Aug. 19 2009. I am the daughter of the aircraft commander mentioned in the article, Foster Huff. I and other family members were happy to see an article about the crew of the 'The City of Spanish Fork," but were disappointed with some inaccuracies. I have included some corrections here. The photograph published in the paper is not crew 811. It is the crew that flew a different aircraft Courtesy photo NEWLY ELECTED: Spanish Fork resident Eugene Colledge has been elected Kiwanis Lt. Governor for Division 10. His term of office runs from October 2009-October 2010. He will be responsible for six Kiwanis clubs from Nephi to Provo. He will induct all new club presidents and officers, plus serve as a resource to the individual clubs. He has served twice as president of the Spanish Fork club and is currently on the Board of Directors. He and his wife, Marilyn, have seven children and 11 grandchildren—most of whom live here in Spanish Fork. (K-37). Here is the correct photo of crew 811 who flew aircraft K-35,"The City of Spanish Fork." The name of the aircraft was "City of Spanish Fork" but normally should not include "Utah" when referencing the plane. "Heavenly Body" was a secondary name on the opposite side of the nose and included nose art. K-35 was the aircraft tail number assigned by the bomb group. The crew flew 20, not 21 missions. The lead pilot is normal- I assume it should say "B-29" rather than "K-29". As aircraft commander Huff decided on the name, they never drew names from a hat. Huff retired in 1967, not 1986. The "bronze oak leaf cluster" is not a medal. It is a device attached to medals indicating multiple awards. Huff settled in Phoenix after he retired in 1968, not after the war. JanelleHuffGebhardt Temecula, Calif. w.r .v.i f Nebo Philharmonic 1 ly referred to as the aircraft commander, not captain. Huff did not join the Air Force after high school; he joined the Army Air Corps (Air Force did not exist until 1947). Walker should be referred to as Walker Army Air Field and it was near Victoria, Kansas, not Liberty (or maybe Liberal) Kansas. The plane they were assigned during training had no tail designation. It had mechanical problems and Huff never said it was jinxed. i *•» i •\ The Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra has three concerts scheduled this 2009-2010 season, which is titled "Potluck Potpourri". It had been to have local clowns, gym- nasts, jugglers and dancers who can bring the feel of a Venetian carnival to Spanish Fork," she said. While this is a daunting task for Bartholomew to undertake, she feels she's definitely qualified. She recently moved from Seattle where she spent several years acting, directing and writing. She will be assisted by Meg Grierson. Bartholomew is excited about bringing theater opportunities to those who might not otherwise have them. "Theater in the Park will be an inclusion theater program. I will cast roles based strictly on talent, not a preconceived notion of what I think the character should look like. Sometimes people won't audition for shows simply because they think they don't have the right look. In inclusion theater, we encourage differences. Race, body type and handicaps have no bearing. As a person of color, there have been times where I had to work twice as hard as other actors to get a role. The same thing happens to the disabled — just because you are blind or in a wheelchair doesn't mean you should be excluded. My stance is that if you have the talent and commitment, you can do the part," she said. Auditions are scheduled for Saturday. Sept. 26 from 12-6 pm. They will be held in the basement of the Spanish Fork Public Library and are by appointment only. The program is also in need of sponsorship.
