Teachers and peer tutors are ready and wilting to help students learn as much as possible. By Whitnye Johns, MJHS. Brockbank NEW MEDIUM: East Meadows kindergarten students kicked off the new school year with a blast of shaving cream! Mrs. Tricia Peterson led them in a fun art activity and encouraged their best and most creative work. Shaving cream and the table surface were introduced as new medium. The youngsters are all excited about learning new things In art. We are off to a great start, and look forward to many fun projects this year. Thanks, Mrs. Peterson! Each month, a different group of teachers act out a common scenario that could happen any day at school. Marvin and Jessie (a.k.a. Mr. Ryan Murray, sixth-grade teacher, and Mrs. Kristel Peterson, second-grade teacher) are "students" at Brockbank who have different experiences each month that they share with the students. The skits focus on a different skill each time and are a great way to teach students about different skills to help them be successful in all aspects of life. This month's skill was on Friendship. Some of the examples of ways a student can be a good friend is by sharing, being a good listener; by showing kindness, empathy, and respect to others; and by helping each other. Students learned that, "a good friend treats others the way he or she would like to be treated." TELLING STORIES: The four third-grade classes at Mapleton Elementary went to the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival on Friday, Sept. 4. They heard stories from the nationally known storytellers Heather Forest and Bill Harley. Billy Harley told them to remember, "If your teacher says line up for candy ... line up!" After enjoying the stories the students had lunch in the park. FFA and 4-H golf tournament The Springville/Mapleton FFA and 4-H Livestock Boosters will sponsor a golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at 9 a.m. The tournament will be held at the Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Spanish Fork. Fee is only $100 per person. The fee will include 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, door prizes for everyone, and awards for the winning team. Included will be a putting KEEPING COOL: The sixth-grade students at Brockbank Elementary have been learning about heat. Students learned about the different ways that heat transfers, as well as conductors and insulators. One of the assignments during this unit was for students to create the best insulating cups. The only stipulation for the cup was that it needed to be able to hold at least one ice cube. Students could use any material they wanted to; they could even take an existing cup and improve it. The sixth-grade teachers were impressed with the creativity that went into making the insulating cups. They saw cups made out of insulating foam, saran wrap, and cardboard. One of the cups used chemicals to keep the ice cube from melting. The students had fun doing this activity and they were able to learn what materials make good insulators through a hands-on experience. The first place winner was Makayla Olson, and the runners up were Alexia Lanegan, Elise Wilson, Payton Sorensen and Lauren Mockett. This is a great opportunity to support your local youth and have fun! Directly after the tournament, there will be the awards presentation at the Club House. All proceeds will benefit our youth community through involvement in the Springville High and Maple Mountain FFA and the Mapleton and Springville 4-H programs. Profit from this event will be used to 'boost' the earnings of the students' livestock sale. Your entry fee is taxdeductible.
