Show Traditions 12 Lindsay B. Wolsey STAFF WRITER This year, the wind is not only coming from the canyon, it's also sweeping down the plains. Spanish Fork Community Theater (SFCT) is proud to present Oklahoma as it's Fiesta Days musical. Summer Sims, publicity director for SFCT said it wasn't too hard to come up with a show for this Fiesta Days season. "We did consider doing High School Musical, however Disney has anational touring company out right now and we were unable to get rights this year. We thought, what would be another great show with great music and dancing, and Oklahoma popped right up," said Sims. "One of the goals we've had as a theater board this year is that we didn't want to stay with the safe five shows that keep popping up around the valley. We wanted to do something that isn't the same thing you see everywhere else. Let's do something great and wonderful, but something that isn't seen as often." The cast has been rehearsing since April under the watchful eye of director Adam Cannon. This is the first show he has directed for SFCT. Last year Cannon was the technical director for the Seussical production. Emily Gast is the choreographer. "Everyone has been working really hard on the show," Sims said. "The choreography is really good. Emily has done a fantastic job on it. Hie music is Rodgers and Hammerstein and you just can't go wrong with that." Miriam Cloward, who plays one of Laurie's friends, said the dance numbers are amazing. "For the tap number [Kansas City), all of the guys have had to learn to tap from scratch. I don't think any of them have taken lessons before, and they're doing it in cowboy boots, no less. I've been tapping all my life, and I am really impressed at how quickly they've picked it up. It's going to be a really fun number," said Cloward. The two romantic leads, Curly and Laurie are played by Trevor Bracknie and Vanessa Sacketts. Ben Mitchell plays Will Parker, and Amanda Castillo plays Ado Annie. Villain Judd Fry is played by Mark Hill and Aunt Eller is played by Cathy Merrill. Show dates are July 18, 19, 21, and 25 at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on the 24 and 26 at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at Boothe Bros. Adult admission is $6, children and senior admission is $6, and immediate family passes for up to six people is $35. FIESTA DAYS 2008 Cliad Carter, www.carti |
