'Everyday hero' visits Spanish Oaks class Celeste Peterson SPANISH OAKS On Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 Sergeant First Class James Wagner visited his son's fourth grade classroom at Spanish Oaks Elementary. Sgt. Wagner served 16 months in Iraq and also in Desert Storm. He came to the classroom in uniform, laptop in hand. His slideshow showed students soldiers in his troop and the Iraqi people. The favorite pictures were of the Strikers, armored vehicles which roll over EIDs without getting destroyed. Sgt. Wagner also took time to answer questions from the students (and teacher). "I learned it could be really fun being in the army. I also learned you have to sacrifice...to serve the country," said student Riley Patterson. Sgt. Wagner's son said, "I'm proud my dad is in the army. We get a lot of benefits." Girls' basketball had their home opener Wednesday night, and what a game to see! Everyone was feeling a little nervous when they saw Oak Canyon's team walk into the gym. The girls on their team were twice the size of ours. The Lady Diamondbacks knew they had a tough game ahead of them, but they were up for the challenge. Oak Canyon got off to and early lead, but were only ahead by three points at half time. The Lady Diamondbacks trailed most of the game, but never once gave up. Although our girls were smaller, they were pulling down more rebounds and playing with greater intensity. They also had great teamwork. Each eligible member of the team contributed with playing time on the court, with five of the Lady Diamondbacks putting numbers on the score board (Brooke Kramer (2), Jordan Kramer (2), Jen Huntsman (11), Emily Merrill (1) and Brittany Taylor (4)). Towards the end of the game, the Lady Diamondbacks tied the game up. With seconds remaining, Jen Huntsman stole the ball, dribbled down the court, and made a lay-up to put the Diamondbacks ahead for the first time all game. The Diamondbacks immediately pressed Oak Canyon as they tried to in-bound the ball. With the pressure on, the Diamondbacks caused Oak Canyon to turn the ball over with 2.1 seconds left on the clock. Kayla Adams kept her head in the game as Oak Canyon put pressure on us now as we tried to in-bound the ball. With the pressure on, Kayla found Sydney Fryer open, who then passed the ball to Brittany Taylor as the game ending buzzer sounded and the Lady Diamondback won 20-18! Congratulations to all the Lady Diamondbacks for a great team win! Team Members: Brittany Taylor, Brooke Kramer, Chalese Andrew, Chelcee Zufelt, Emily Merrill, Jen Huntsman, Jordan Kramer, Kayla Adams, Kylie Kramer, MicaelaDominguez, Paige James, Sydney Fryer(Managers: Catharine Clark, Susan Iketau, and Marian Dawe Coaches: Coach Savik and Coach Hanks) Annual food drive held On Nov. 5-16, 2007 Diamond Fork Junior High School held its 11th annual food drive to benefit the Utah County Emergency Food Bank. The Character Education Student Council, the school's student service organization, set the food drive goal at a . lofty 13,500 items. Fifth period classes competed against each other in a race to donate the most items by the end of the drive. The competition became downright fierce as the pride of every fifth period class was put to the test. When the smoke had cleared, the students of Diamond Fork Junior High School had not only reached their goal of 13,500, but exceeded it by over 2,500 items. When the counting was finished, 16,169 food items had been donated. The food bank officials that came to pick-up the food (in three different truck loads) commented that it was the largest single contribution they had ever seen. The top 10 donating fifth period classes were Ms. Anderson, Ms. Fowler, Ms. Reese, Ms. Moses, Mr. Buck, Mr. Mitchell, Ms. Gardner, Mr. Bingham, Ms. Nelson, and Mr. Bigler's classes. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped make the food drive a success. Fall Stars Assembly Diamond Fork Junior recently held their Fall Stars Assembly. Students shared a variety of talents including skateboard tricks, instrumental pieces, training birds and dance numbers. We appreciate all students who participated.
