Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2007 • B3 Dons vs. Layton: From LAYTON • B l in many games this season. But basic physics played a difference in this ball game. The Lancers used size, strength and speed to disrupt Lewis and Co. from locating its fourth quarter magic. Even though Layton won by the convincing margin of 42-7, a choked up Coach Christensen was very pleased with this year's team. "This has been a fun group to coach," he said. "They're really coach-able. I'm just proud of them because everybody wrote us off and didn't think we had a shot to win many games and even make the play-offs. I don't know what will happen 20 years from now, but this might be the most successful team with the kids we had. They gave everything." Spanish Fork began and finished their '07 season by facing two 5 A title contenders in Layton and Alta. Both of those contests had no bearing whether the Dons would end up having a successful season or not. It was, rather, the boys1 hard work and positive attitude which allowed them to be successful. There were even moments during practice when their coach asked them to meet his conditioning expectations and this group went above and beyond. They wanted greatness and expected nothing short of it. "There were times when we over-achieved," said Christensen. "These guys never backed down from anyone. They were always outsized and outmanned. But it didn't matter. Our guys took it as a challenge and I'm just proud. They're great kids." The Lancers scored on their second play from scrimmage on a 69-yard TD scamper. They made quick work as they added two more on the ground and as many through the air by halftime. Layton scored their final touchdown on an end around run with four minutes to go in the third. Spanish .Fork's offense came out poised and ready to "I'm really proud of [this team] ... They gave everything." — Matt Christensen make a run, but the Lancer defense made big plays to kill each drive. However, the Dons' special teams unit gave the offense another shot in the fourth when a Lancer put the ball on the turf on a punt return. Spanish Fork recovered and drove 70 yards in 13 plays, and capped it off with an eight-yard TD strike from Lewis to Naulu. The Dons had to -convert on two fourth down plays on this drive. The first one came after the officials ruled an incompletion to big man Jordunn Mattinson. So, on fourth down, Lewis called the very same play. The towering tight end went up and hauled in an "in your face" 27-yard reception for a big first down. Naulu snagged the other one on an out pattern which set up the Dons only score of the afternoon. If there's a lesson to learn from this year's squad, this is it: it's not the size of the Don that matters, but rather the size of the fight in the Don.
