The drill team has performed at football games throughout the season. They will now shift their focus indoor to basketball games and drill competitions. However, on this afternoon, they were determined to leap out of the gates, and that's just what they did. The red and gray exploded for 31 unanswered first half points and coasted for an easy 3 8 14 victory to move on to the state playoffs. The Spanish Fork Dons found themselves back on Lehi's field turf in only four days and ironically, they began in the same predicament as the Friday before. The Dons kicked off to begin play and scored 36 seconds later. Chris Olson recovered a fumble on Lone Peak's first play from scrimmage and two plays later, Lewis found Jordunn Mattinson for a 10-yard TD toss. On the ensuing kickoff, the same result occurred. A Knight lost the pigskin on his way to the turf and the Dons Jordan Downey quickly recovered. Eight plays later and the Dons were in business again. Spanish capitalized when Alan Measom split the uprights with a 23-yard field goal which gave them an early 10-0 lead. The Don defense also came out tiring on all cylinders and didn't allow a first down for 13 minutes of play. Spanish Fork controlled the tempo early and looked to increase their lead often. On a crucial fourth down play, Lewis hooked up with Randolph on a pass play. Kade Christensen pounded his way through on fourth and one to give the Dons a 17-0 advantage. Just when Lone Peak began to find some offensive rhythm. Matt Gardner quickly shut that door when he intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards to the Lone Peak 24-yard line. Spanish capitalized three plays later when Lewis found Naulu for a 24-yard TD strike. With less than six minutes until the half, the Dons were hun»rv for more. Zac Clayton picked up a huge first down with a 26-yard reception. He outleaped several defenders for the ball and set up the final score of the half. Lewis then found Jordunn Mattinson on a fade route. The sophomore sensation was covered like glue but found a way to make an amazing grab. Mattinson reached out with one hand and tipped the ball three times before securing it just as he hit the turf. Spanish took an overwhelming 31-0 lead into the locker room. The Knishts came out swinging to start the second half. Lone Peak RB Jordan Lowry ripped off a 56-yard TD scamper but the Dons answered right back. Trevor Randolph made one man miss before out-racing every Knight to pay-dirt. Lone Peaks' Lowry scored again on a pass play but the deficit was too large to overcome. "Last time we played them, they chewed up the clock," said Coach Christensen. "Every time we touched the ball on offense, our goal was to score. The big tight end was a favorite target for quarterback Breck Lewis throughout the season. Wilson finished the year with 750 total yards on offense and eight touchdowns.
