Shoe named Coach of the Year Chad Vest STAFF WRITER The mark of a great program is their consistency in winning. Not only has Coach Jim "Shoe" Nelson been a winner in his 22-plus tenure, he's always done it with class. Coaches and newspapers have given him due respect with awards such as Coach of the Year. He has been honored six or seven times for his achievements as the SF skipper. Besides the 400-plus wins, he has won multiple region championships, along with three state titles. One of those titles came in the '80s, the other in the '90s, and now he has another in the first decade of the 21 st century. The Spanish Fork baseball team competed in the 5A ranks for the first time in 2006 and took home the state crown in the very same year. This past week. Coach Shoe received the Utah High School Activities Association Baseball Coach of the Year. Believe it or not, this award is a first for the Dons' great baseball coach. He commented on his initial reaction. "Well, I was honored number one," said Coach Shoe. "I was shocked number two, but like I always say, good players make good coaches." The coach of the year honors of the past came from the coaches association as well as the tribune among others. SF Athletic Director Doug Snell also commented on this prestigious award. "It's outstanding and welldeserved," said Snell. "It's a semi-national award by the National Federation High School and now he could get regional, and if he does, then it's a chance to be the National Coach of the Year." Richard M. |
