"I love it! It's good and it's worth it." said Karin Hyatt, council member. Each month they meet to come up with activities and service projects to do in their community. They have done many projects in the town, such as the Easter egg hunt, Sub for Santa, a senior Valentines dance, fundraisers and more. "There's a lot of service to be done," said Jason Carrick, head council member. Each member has a favorite activity, or service project. One of Jason's favorite projects was the Sub for Santa, especially when he got to help buy and deliver the gifts. "The best part is taking the gifts to families and seeing their reactions," said Carrick. Hyatt enjoyed the luminaires they did at Christmas time, which are paper bags with lit candles inside them. . "We do a lot during Christmas. We put luminaires in the cemetery and light them on Christmas Eve." Hyatt said. Council member, Katie Lauritzen liked when they held the senior Valentines dance. She said it was so cute to see. "The band had red sparkly vests, in accordion and a banjo. They really, really had fun," she said. Lauritzen is also looking forward to the Salem Days 'Fair in the Square' after the parade at the Downtown Ball Park Aug. 11. The council members will be running the children's game booths. Lauritzen will be at the White Swings booth. "I'm excited for the fair because [the swings] are so fun," Sraid Lauritzen. both fun and work. Many of the council members are friends, making the hard work more enjoyable. "It's fun • being involved with the community and forming friendships. Everyone on [the council] is your friend," said Hyatt. Part of being involved in the community is formulating friendships with all ages. The youth have been able to get acquainted with many, especially the adults they have the privilege of working with. Although the youth organize the events, none of it would be possible without the adults in the background. "They do a lot of work behind the scenes. They know the people to talk to, but we organize it. The advisors let us do pretty much everything," said Hyatt. One great opportunity for leadership the council may get is a chance to learn skills in law and government. If there are troubled youth in Salem, instead of going to a juvenile court, their parents can choose to let them go to a court made up of the Salem Youth Council where there is a judge and jury. "They get to practice the democratic system," said Hyatt. There are many reasons each member joined the council. "My favorite part is being with all the youth," said Hyatt. To be on the Salem City Youth Council, you must fill out and return .an application at the Salem City Office. You must also be a high school student and can serve through the calendar year in which you graduate. "[The Salem Youth Council] is a really good thing to get involved with," said Carrick. "Salem is just a cute little town you g get to serve in. There's room for tt Smiles for a Lifetime I)r, KcndalU.
