BYU expecr.s to repeat last years victory in which the Cougars edged the Thunderbirds at home 185.4 to 182.5, but Southern Utah has plans to hamper BYU' s hopes. The SUU Gymnastic Squad is expecting some favorable results of their own. The Thunderbirds stand ready to reestablish themselves not only to BYU but to the entire Western Athletic Conference (WAC) as a team to be reckoned with. This year is a first for the Thunderbirds in that they will be competing in the WAC as an affiliate member. The Thunderbird's all-around year averages have taken enonnous leaps each year since l 989 when the average was 165.32 to 1992 when the average reached 186.31. This year hopes to bring more of the same results with another elevation of the team's all-around scores. About the matchup against BYU, SUU Gymnastic Coach Scott Bauman said, "Brigham Young is on.e of the best teams in the country, without a doubt. They have four, maybe five, girls that can score over 39 in the all-around. The only other team with that capability is [defending national champion] Utah." The Cougars finished 12th in last year's NCAA Championship meet and are improved this year with the addition of world-class freshmen Juliet Bangerter and Elisabeth Crandall to the squad. "They have Bangerter and Crandall coming in who are world class, and they return lChristy] McAdams and [Nanette) Thornock who are also very strong," said Bauman of the Cougars. "They' re tough and they're deep. I don't know what their injury sin.iation is, but I know Brad [Cattermole] is an excellent coach who has done a remarkable job in the last five years." Bauman also noted that although a viaory over the Cougars will be unlikely, however it won't be impossible. "We don't anticipate beating BYU, but we do anticipate being competitive with them," he noted. "Last year they ca.me here for the first meet of the season and going into the final rom.tion they knew they had to hit their routines to beat us. They hit them, and beat us, but it was a good, close meet. It was closer than they thought it would be I think." One of the reasons why Bauman anti.cipates rompeting well against BYU is that he said SUU is one of the premier teams in the nation on the floor exercise_ Another factor that will help SUU in tonight's meet is their ability co perfonn well under pressure. Bauman said, "This team seems co really pull it out when they're under pressure. They've always been able to do thaL" Lady Lions down 'Birds bounce Idaho State 79-63, now 6-6 Lady 'Birds 68-60 Five of the Thunderbirds' six wins have come over members of the Big Sky Conference BY JAY HINTON BY JAKE CUDNEY Thunderbird Sport, Writer The SUU Men's Basketball team evened it's record to 6-6 Sanuday night with a victory over Idaho State, 79-63. Idaho State had only dropped one game at home this season, and they were going for win number 200 on their home court Holt Arena. SU never trailed during the first half and took their largest lead of the half into the locker room, 34-20. The Thunderbirds hie 1426, for 62 percent from the field in the first half, but shot 39 percent from the line making only 5 of 13. The Bengals shot poorly from the fidd hitting 7 of 26, for 27 percent. Head Coach Bill Evans attributed this to SU's defense. 'Vie did a good job defending the things they wanted to do. We spent a lot of time preparing to take away the things they do really well,~ Evans said. Southern Utah's leading scorers at the half were James lewis and Curtis Loyd who each had seven. Lewis hit one of three foul shots, and Loyd hit one of four. Although the Thunderbirds went into halftime with a lead Evans said he was disappointed with the foul shooting during the first half. The 'Birds increased their lead to 16, but then their defense allowed Idaho State to get within four with 10 minutes left in the game. The Bengals had three chances to cut the Thunderbird lead down to two points, but were unable to convert. After Idaho States third chance to pull within two, Evens called a timeout to regroup. SU went on to score eight saaight points to take a 12 point lead, and end the Bengal run. The Thunderbirds finished the second half having hit f3 of 24, for 54 percent from the field. The teams foul shooting improved in the second half from 39 percent in the first half to 72 percent in the second half. Richard Barton, playing with a broken wrist, Led all Thunderbird scorers with 25. He hit 9 of 16 from the field, and only missed two from the line hitting 7-9. This marks the 11th time in 12 games that Barton has been the 'Birds leading scorer. Barton was followed by Loyd who finished with 14 and Lewis who scored two points in the second half to finish with nine. Barton and Loyd were SU's leaders on the boards each pulling down six. Andy Jensen pulled down five rebounds and Kurt Bailey came up with four. Southern Utah only turned the ball over 11 times, while Idaho State gave the ball up 13 times. "We were able to take good ca.re of the ball. We turned the ball over 11 times, that's not bad. I'll take that a lot of nights." Evans said. The Thunderbirds are in action on Jan. 15 in the Centrum against the Texas Wesleyan Rams. Then on the 18th and 20th tthe 'Birds are on the road against Southeast Missouri State and lowa State University of the Big Eight Conference. r-----------------------------, All Cassettes i CLASSIFIED $ 25 Tiu,ndnlmd °"5i~ mU$t be submimed ro <>Ut ofli<,a on the buemfflr 1.-.d of the T cchnoloi!J Building or ID the aecffl:aQ' of the So.xknt ~ .
