SUU will try to get its football fortunes baclc on trade this weekend when the Thunderbirds travel to Santa Clara, Calif., to take on Santa Clara University's Broncos at 7 p.m. (PD11 in a non-conference clash. The Thunderbirds (2-3, ~l in the WFC) arc coming off a disappointing 35-18 road loss at Portland Stare University, while the Broncos (32) hold a two-game winning strealc. Santa Clara, has consecutive wins over San Francisco Stare and Humboldt State. The Broncos, one of the original founding members of the WFC, are affiliated members of the conference this season after ending an 1~year membership at the end of last season. Although the game will not have impact upon the conference race, it is an important one for the T-Birds in terms of getting baclc on the winning track. "We've got to get our game together," said SUU Head Football Coach Jack Bishop. "Right now we've got to regroup and worry about the things we do. The Broncos have been giving up more yards than they have been gaining this season, but a balanced offense, powered by the passing of John St Jacques and the rushing of Aron Wisc, has been putting points on the board. SCU ave~ 28.4 points per game to 28>0 for its opponents. Defensively, the Broncos have been equally vulnerable to the pass and the run. They have allowed 960 yards on the ground and 1,068 passing yards. The last meeting was marked by Zed Robinson's 343-yard output, the ninth best total in NCAA Division II history, as the 'Birds started a seven-game unbeaten strealc. After the Santa Clara tilt, the Thunderbirds will be back at the Coliseum of Southern Utah for games with St Mary's, Sac State and Cal State Northridgc. All games arc scheduled for 1 p.m. stam. Although the Thunderbirds d ropped the game 35-18, Doss, a senior from Missoula, MT., racked up 16 tad<lcs including seven solo. He also ~ red a pair of fumbles, o ne of which be took five yards for a touchdown. In two games since replacing the injured James Bleak at strong-side linebaclccr, Doss bas totalled 30 taclcJcs. • Maranda had a great game; said SUU Head Football Coach Jack Bishop: ·0ur defense was struggling sometimes, but Doss gave us a big spark. He was one of our real bright spots and truly deserves the award. He is a perfect example of a guy who has been given an opportunity and made the most of it; Bleak is a fine player, but he's going to have a tough time getting his starting Spot back."
