"Jodi and Julie have a real good chance and Susie has an outside chance of making it," said SUU G ymnastic Coach Scott Bauman. Bauman also said that Lisa Gomez had a chance of qualifying for regionals but she didn't compete in enough required meets in order to qualify. As a team, the 21st-ranked Lady Thunderbirds didn' t qualify with a regional qualifying score of 188.21, but Bauman is pleased that this season' s score is better than last year's 183.21. SUU is part of a 10-team region consisting of Utah, BYU, Utah State, Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Denver University. Of the 10 teams seven will qualify for regioanls. Seven of the 10 teams arc ranked in the top 20. Utah is number one, ASU is number five, BYU is number nine, Utah state is 10th, and Oklahoma is 19th. " The region is extremely strong, " said Bauman. " All of the teams in the region are in the top 25. We arc a couple of 10ths away from making regionals. " Julie Aguirre Jodi McKay Bauman said that region announcements will be made this weekend after conference meets. Nebraska holds a 188.4 regional qualifying score and Oklahoma holds a 188.6 RQS which is two-10ths better than SUU . Susie SpechJ Crucial mistakes haunt SU nine The SUU baseball team picked up two wins in six tries over the spring break. The 'Birds had doubleheaders with Metro State on March 14, Northern Colorado on Friday and Metro again Saturday afternoon. With the two wins the 'Birds stand a 3-17 on the year. Saturday afternoon the ' Birds dropped the doubleheader to Metro 7-5 and 5-4. In the opener Allen Enochson led the ' Birds offensively with two hits in four tries with a double, run scored and RBI. In the second game, SUU's Gary Reese went 2 for 4 with a double, run scored and RBI. " We hit fairly well," said SUU Baseball Coach Steve Rollo. "We had the opportunitites to score but couldn' t capitalize." He also said that it was the lack of execution of basic plays that accounted for the two losses. "We were within two plays of two additional wins," said Rollo. "We made mistakes at crucial times and we didn' t come away with the wins." In Friday's action with Northern Colorado, SUU bounced back after losing the first game 5-1 to take the nightcap 4-0. The 64 teams that began the bid for the national title have now been trimmed to 16. Many people have their eyes on Duke to see if it can be the first team since UCLA to repeat as national champs, while others are looking at teams like UCLA and Oklahoma State to sneak in and capture the title. Do I have any reason to watch the remainder of the NCAA's since my team-Arkansas-was ousted in the second round? Yes. I will turn my attention to UTEP and New Mexico State, two of the six teams that SUU played in the regular season that drew bids to the big dance. Southern Utah faced Stanford, Nebraska, New Mexico State, UTEP, Evansville and Montana and each one of them received a slot in the 64-team tourney. Although SUU posted a 20-8 record, which included wins over Evansville and Montana, it was denied a bid to the NCAA tournament, but at the same time 25-4 Wisconsin-Green Bay, a top 20-tcam, was denied entry in the field . The ' Birds beat Evansville 98-93 and Montana 74-65 , but lost to Stanford 89-71 , New M exico State 87-80, Nebraska 106-101 and UTEP 65-57. Let 's look at these six teams and see how they are faring or fared . thus far in the tournament. All four teams fell in the first round. Nebraska lost to Connecticut, Alabama beat Stanford , UTEP ousted Evansville, and Florida State gave Montana an early exit. Both UTEP and New Mexico State have advanced to the " Sweet 16" with impressive wins. After beating Evansville, UTEP knocked off the number one Midwest seed Kansas and it will face Cincinnati March 27 in Dayton, Ohio. New Mexico State dumped DePaul and Southwest Louisiana to advance to meet with number one seed UCLA in Tempe, Ariz., March 26. With numerous setbacks and controversies, the SUU squad netted its best record at the Division I level, so former SUU Head Coach Neil Roberts and assistant Bill Evans and the 'Birds should be commended for their outstanding play during the 1991-92 season. Nevertheless, when one looks at the NCAAs-and the NIT-it's hard not to imagine what might have been had the ball rolled the 'Birds' way a few more times. and shut out of the season. Offensively, Joe Blackham and Rich Jannen went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Enochson went 2 for 4.
