And, the aesthetic Randall Jones Theatre on the lovely campus of Southern Utah University. A picture-perfect scene that the public is invited to join. The SUU chool of Continuing & Professional Studies' 12th season of the Summer Evening Concert Series will kick off on July 1 and run every Sunday evening through August 12. This year's line-up is hotter than July itself! Each of the award-winning performers offer an exquisite, individual style of music that will entertain the senses. On July 1, "The Hot Club of Cowtown' comes to our town. And , by the way , did you know, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that we ·tern swing?' That's the philosophy behind thi:. group's countrified musical time warp from the 1930s to '40s. The Club's instrumental work simply amazes , and its smooth, crooning vocals evoke memories of earlier, laid-back times. The precise mix of hot jazz and western swing is technically ·tunning. The joy that the members of The Ilot Club of Cowtown project while playing is contagious and simply leaves each of their audiences feeling happy and good. July 8th hostS "The Alison Brown Quartet," the Grammy award-winning bluegrass/Jazz group. J\n intematiooallyrecognizt:d banjoist, Alison Brown, along with the remaining three members of her quartt:t, expand the banjo's musical horizons ,. incorporating elements of bluegrass, jazz and e,·en Latin music. Their performance is an exciting program chac has been described as "an ear-opening pleasure." Billboard Magazine says Brown's banjo is "an instrument possessed oi a unique sonic signature and int:scapable beauty" and that Brown is a musician whose virtuosity is immediately apparent. "Sabella" brings its chamber and renaissance"jazz to the area on July 15. Influenced hy six centuries of world music , Sabella incorporates the mandolin, mandocello, saxophone, flute , penny whistJe, elecuonic woodwinds, piano and percussion into its ensemble of pure, beautiful music. musical vi ionary, Sabella has broken barriers between conventional musical forms. Audiences are moved by the wit, warmth and soul conveyed through crystalline notes. "The Boulder Brass" is holder baroque and bolder pop and \vill be the summer concert on the evening of July 22 . A collaboration of the country's foremost professionals in this genre of music, The Boulder Brass is the ultimate hras.s ensemble. Twelve giants of today's hras.s music have come together to play classic masterpieces to cutting-edge contemporary works . The world' hottest classical ensemble .... or its tighte t pop band, the "Los Angeles Guitar Quartet" will entertain on July 29. Guitar Player Magazine says, "If you haven't heard a classical guitar quartet before, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet won't just how you what you've been cnissing--it'll blow you away!" The LACG unequivocally brings a new energy to the concert stage with eclectic musical interplay. The group is critically acclaimed for its transcriptions of concert masterworks, yet it continually breaks ground with its dynamic talents. "Golden Bough" will offer Celtic selections, with a kick , on Aug. 5. Drawing from a rich history of Celtic folk tradition , straight from Wales , Brittany, Cornwall , Ireland, Isle of Man , Galicia and Scotland, Golden Bough's first European performances wl:!re along cobble streets and in small folk clubs. These days, the group is on major cours of Europe and has established itself as one of America's prt:mier Celtic bands. Its creative fusion ·of Ct:lric and original music on a wide variety of acoustic instruments have made it a favorite at Celtic festivals , highland games and Irish/Scottish gatherings across the globe-and now, in Cedar City . Already a jazz legend, for the next generation, 'The Stefon Harris Quartet" will wrap up thi year' · Summer Evening Concert Series with its incredible tones ·on Aug. 12. Passionate. Energizing. Commanding presence. Thest! are all reasons why Stefan Harris is at the forefront of the current jazz scene. This 20-something-year-old is committed to exploring the rich potential of jazz composition as well as blazing new trails on the vibraphone .
