Show UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS !MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1001 Pipe·l lne is for students BY LISA GRADY JOURNAL STAFF VVRITER Teqmological treats are coming down the Pipeline to SUU. · SUU is now equipped with the Campus Pipeline, an online service that will make mass e-mails, faculty office hours, list serves and study groups more convenient and efficient User-friendly-features is one of the main reasons that SUU decided to purchase the Pipeline, said Dave lier, systems programmer for SUU. Campus Pipeline can be accessed from any web browser at any time to gain instant access to activity information , news stories and academic resources. The new system creates a custom page for each faculty member and student linking them to academic pages for each class, providing virtual office hours for faculty that can be run from their home or office and offers specific messages and headlines customized for the individual user. Pipeline also makes online study groups possible for students. "The pipeline is a growing company ... there should be significant enhancements in the future ..." lier said. Pipeline currently offers options such as sending a message to everyone in a specific major, club-or class with just one At click, online registration and book buying. From a student's perspective "a lot of it is just a time-saving feature .. .it's all right there in one spot...one-stop shopping." said Julianne Hall. a senior from Salt Lake City majoring in communication. Hall works as the public relations dlrector for the Centurium Consulting Group which will be handling the publicity for Campus Pipeline. Campus Pipeline was paid for on a grant basis, said Jeannette Ormond, director of admin systems information technology, but SUU purchased the new server required to house the program. In addition , Campus Pipeline reserves the right to advertise on a section of each page which assists with the cost of purchase. Ormond said. The Pipeline was originally slated to go into effect Jan. 8, but ·everything just took longer than expected." Ormond said. The system is now ready for faculty and student use by logging onto http://cpipeline.suu.edu. As with many new systems. there is the possibility that some glitches remain to be worked out. lier said he "would appreci~te any report of inaccuracies in the system ," by e-mailing iler@suu.edu. Workshops will be offered for faculty to learn how to use Campus Pipeline.
