Show !MONDAY, DECEMBER 4 , 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEW$ Civil ·War history is topic at Distinguished Faculty Convo Continuing conflicts over the meanings, memories, and commemorations of the Civil War will be the topic of discussion at the Dec. 7 Tanner Distinguished Faculty Honor Lecture at SUU. Earl Mulderink, associate professor of history at SUU, will present the illustrated lecture at 11 :30 a.m: in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. The title of the presentation is "An Unending War?: Contested Commemorations of the American Civil War.· The public is invited to attend the free lecture. A competitive peer review process is utilized each year at the university to select an honoree to present the Distinguished art ' Facuity Honor Mufderil}I( Lecture. The-Grace A. Tanner Center for Human Values at the university sponsors the annual presentation. ·or. Mulderink will use a computer and multimedia projector to display a variety of visual images relating to commemorations of the Civil War. The images will help illustrate our on-going differences regarding events relating to the war,· Neal Cox, director of SUU's Convocations series, said. The images will include sculptures of famous figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee, depictions of ordinary soldiers in Boston's Shaw Memorial and Alabama's Confederate Soldier Monument, and excerpts from contemporary media and· World Wide Web sites that focus on the Civil War. Mulderink joined the SUU history faculty in 1995. He has taught history classes centerrng on the United States, African Americans, and South Africa. During the 1999 2000 academic year, he served as president of the SUU Faculty Senate. He was awarded his . bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, while both his master's and Doctoral degree in United States history were earned at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Mulderink has published articles, book reviews, independant study courses, and Web-based teaching materials. His doctoral dissertation, completed in 1995, compared African-American and IrishAmerican community life in New Bedford, Mass., during the Civil War era.
