Utah Girls State, which will involve 356 high school girls from cities and towns across the state, will be hosted June 7-12 by Southern Utah University. The Utah American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring the week of training in political procedures and in local and state government functions. Local -Auxiliary posts have selected participants in Utah Girls State from their area high schools and communities through application and competition. Girls who will be starting their senior year of high school this fall will be partieipating. After being divided into mythical political parties, counties , and cities , the girls create the government structure and citizenry of a st.ate which includes three counties and 12 cities. Actual elected and appointed city, county, and state officials will speak to Girls State citizens during the week. Question and answer sessions following the speeches will allow the girls to address currently serving government officials with individual concerns and inquiries regarding actual issues and circumstances. "Through experiencing the actual processes of organizing party conventions , enacting legislation , and carrying out judicial functions, the girls receive a wonderful understanding of the workings of government and politics," Jane Comp, assistant director of conference services at SUU, said. "A staff of adult leaders from the Auxiliary supervises and directs the training.~ Four girls elected to statewide office at last year's Girls State will conduct most of the sessions and activities. They will be assisted by members of American Legion Auxiliary posts from throughout the sta.te. Annaleise Oswald, Orem (Mountain View HS), will serve as the 1999 governor. She will be assisted by Jennifer Lowry, Logan (Logan HS), attorney general: Britta Ameel , Salt Lake City (East HS), Girls Nation Senator; and Corey Lastinger, Salt Lake City (Brighton HS), Girls Nation Senator. Judy Daybell, Sandy, will be the Auxiliary's director of this year's Girls State. Her assistant directors are Valerie Hopper, Elsinore, and Lisa Kolstad, Salt Lake City. "Several patriotic, social, and entertainment activities are scheduled during the week," Comp said. "Some of the traditional highlights of Girls State include talent programs produced by the girls, a mock trial, and general elections for Girls State and Girls Nation officers who will return next year to preside over the week's activities."
