TO THAT END, WE HAVE GREATLY INCREASED THE SALARY AND BENEFITS FOR MOST JOBS BEGINNING FALL SEMESTER 1998. WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO JOIN us.· Alf APPLICATION CONSISTS OF A RESUME AND A LETTER EXPLAINING WHY YOU WANT TO WORK AT THE 'JOURNAL' AND WHY WE SHOULD HIRE YOU. THE FOLLOWING OPENINGS EXIST FOR FALL AND APPLICANTS SHOULD KNOW THAT AMONG THE REQUIREMENTS IS THE ABILITY TO ATTEND THE PRE-FALL WORKSHOP WHICH RUNS AUGUST 17-24. CLASSES BEGIN AUGUST 25, BUT WE'LL PAY FOR YOUR HOUSING AND FOOD FOR THE EXTRA WEEK. POSITIONS ARE NOT LIMITED TO JOURNALISM MAJORS. COPY EDITOR: This highly motivated. dependable and responsible person is charged with editing stories by reporters for content. grammar, s~lling and for journalistic style. which includes everything from consistency of form and usage to the spelling of people's names. The position requires an individual who pays a great attention to detail and who can work with little supervision. The time commitment is some 12 hours per week. mostly in the time blocks of Tuesday afternoon to late Wednesday afternoon and from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. PAY is $650 per semester plus paid in-state tuition or Its equivalent in additional pay if the selected applicant already has a scholarship. REPORTER(S): This highly motivated, dependable and responsible person must possess good writing and journalistic skills as well as good judgment in terms of what makes news. Time commitment will vary from day to day and week to week but this individual will be expected to write two stories per week-the equivalent of roughly four hours per week. Assignments will often be made to reporters but editors will also appreciate their ability to generate their own stories. THESE POSITIONS CAN ALSO BE USED FOR ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT WRITERS & SPORTSWRITERS. PAY ls $350 per semester. PHOTOGR.APHER(S): This highly motivated. dependable and responsible .ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR: This highly motivated, dependable and person will use, largely, a digital camera and have a good eye for what responsible person is expected to cover the arts and entertainment areas of makes a good photo and for what makes a good news photo. Photographer will also use darkroom skills for sports and other photos which require campus and should have a knowledge of such areas. Editor coordinates "fast" exposure. All photo equipment is provided. Typically, a photographer coverage of arts and entertainment events and lays out pages using Quark will receive three or four assignments per week-a time commitment of Xpress on a Mac. Those skills may be learned in the workshop period, but perhaps one hour per assignment-and will be required to obtain all the selected individual must have good judgment in terms of coverage. PAY ls $650 per semester. must have exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work well with others in a supervisory role for a staff which will include an assistant editor, two reporters and a photographer. Editor coordinates Focus sections ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVE: Working under the supervision of the sales manager, who is a stud~nt, this person will service a wide covering in detail a wide range of issues. The ability to work on multiple range of advertising accounts in and around Cedar City and, perhaps, if topics simultaneously and in advance will be a great plus. Assignments will often be made to senior staff writers but editors will also appreciate their ability to generate their own stories. PAY ls $500 per semester plus paid in-state tultlon or Its equivalent in additional pay if the selected applicant already has a scholarship. OF COURSE, there are other paid positions which are being carded over from this year and there are other unpaid positions for people who wlsh to work themselves into paid posttlons.
