Rules of the Road drive vacation, Spring Break etiquette With Spring Break around the corner, many of us might be planning a road trip. Whether it takes you to Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Mexico, or Billings, Mont., there is something intoxicating about road trips, especially as a college student. Maybe its the thrill of getting away from the monotony of school, the prospect of an adventure, or simply for no reason at all. With all the spontaneity and unpredictability of the common road trip, one must realize that there are rules all must obey. These rules are universal whether you are going to the north, east, south or west. To better acquaint you with these rules before Spring Break, I give you the Rules of the Road. Rule number one: You talk about road-trippe- rs road trips. Rule number two: You TALK about road trips. One of the joys of a memorable road trip is the exclusive club one creates through inside jokes and recurring stories. If you want to make your trip to Wyoming sound better than it might have been, talk it up! People will be jealous. Rule number three: Calories dont count. If you counted calories during a road trip, you probably had a handful of nuts, prunes and bottled water. I must apologize to those who might enjoy this, but road trips are about licorice, beef jerky, candy and bear claws. It is about 44 ounces of Mountain Dew, Red Bull and orange juice with your pastry. If calories gassed your car, youd only get to Beaver on nuts and prunes. Rule number four: American Pie is mandatory singing. Music is one of the most essential parts of a road , trip, and that is why one of my road trip preparations is downloading a playlist. One song you will always find in my list is Don McLeans American Pie. It is 8 12 minutes of golden group singing. Make sure you include this track and many other g songs that will make the open road a lot more fun. Rule number five: The car must visit at least one JOSHUA historical marker. Before the age of the Internet, roadside markers were Americas s Wikipedia. It doesnt really matter what happened at the site, but when you see a marker you must stop and read you never know what you will learn. You can these visits by visiting the Historical Marker Database at www. hmdb.org. Rule number six: What in the body, happens happens outside. This rule doesnt need much explanation. Needless to say, if you feel the need to release anything, initiate an immediate car stop for a stretch. And always have a camera HANSEN on your person, so when everyone is waiting for you inside the car, you are taking pictures for the scrapbook. Always make sure to send a postcard either to your mom or significant other. Who doesnt like postcards of Yellowstone bears playing in garbage, someone hugging Shamu, or the Worlds Largest Watermelon? I know my mom appreciates them. So make sure to follow these seven simple rules of the road next time you hop into the car for that unforgettable sacred pilgrimage shared among family and friends: the road trip.
