Show PAGE 6 JULY 20, 1987 THE SUMMERBIRD looE: to anotfcec great year gcicklers seeks to improve on last seasons fine mark with solid returners, top newcomers Y&a&aradies'&SBE'di Jack Bishop's squad 8-- 3 A generous number of top returning players, stirred in with increased size and strength gained through successful recruiting should give SUSC the right recipe for an impressive 1987 football team. Defensively, Head Coach Jack Bishop figures this years team will be significantly tougher than last club. We picked up some big and seasons strong people, and we did some adjusting that we didnt have time to do last year. We should be strong defensively; our linebacking is looking especially good, Bishop says. The offense should also show improvement, especially across the front line where size will be more evident and quality depth should be more abundant. Skill positions are laced with experience. We are way ahead of where we were last year when we had an coaching staff, and a into a team, Bishop to mold of group strangers says. This year we know much more about what kind of players we have and where we are headed. Offensively, Bishop will stick with the veer formation which was highly successful last season. Quarterback Chad Richard, a 1986 Football Conference selection, will be back to guide the attack. Richard's spring practice performances had Bishop beaming. Hes going to be even more effective than last year, Bishop said. I'd say he could be in line for some postseason honors if he performs like it appears he will. Four experienced running backs led by starters will be back. Also Kyle Wilson and Tony McGeary returning are Thane Marshall, a very promising senior. sophomore, and Rob Hill, a Sophomore Mike Graham and transfers Jim Andrus and Jeff Simons looked good in spring drills. Wide receiver depth may be down some from last year, but the talent looks plenty adequate. Scott Mosher is a probable starter, while Todd Watts and converted quarterback Jeff McComb show plenty of promise. 8-- 3 Head 4Bird Coach Jack Bishop all-ne- 1387 THUNDERBIRD Sept. 5 Sept. 12 Sept. 19 Sept. 26 r i l FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FORT LEWIS COLLEGE WESTERN STATE COLLEGE Weber State College Nov. 7 Nov. 14 'PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY Cal Lutheran University 'SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY Fort Lewis College 'Cal State University Northridge 'Cal State University Sacramento CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO Nov. 21 Mesa College Oct. We are pleased with the number of excellent applicants who expressed interest in the position, Sherratt said. The experience and skills demonstrated by Gary Gallup should be very beneficial to our program. He will officially begins his duties August 1 , according to Gerald R. Sherratt, SUSC president. Gallup brings to SUSC 25 years of experience in sports administration, broadcasting and communications at the University of Wyoming, the University of Texas at El Paso and Southern Methodist Stong veteran offensive linemen Brent Bailey, and Ross Harris will get a big boost from newcomers Everett Kelepolo and Dave Ontiveros. We should be much deeper on the offensive line this year. Bishop says. The battle to start at tight end is going to be furious, with Mike Gaurino and transfer Ron Clement both showing great ability. That position will be solid. Linebacking is the strenth of the defense, if spring practices were a true indicator. Veteran Todd Olsen leads the backing crew. Lettermen Stuart Johnson and Lani Higby are looking like theyll have another good year, and youngsters (sophomores) Damon Olsen and Gary Robinson are coming into their own. Add tough transfers Brian Viafunua and Eric McKinney, and its easy to see why Bishop smiles when talking about linebackers. Defensive backs are also experienced. People like Pete Wahlheim, Dennis Wells, Don Wells, and Steve Drainey should make our defensive backfield strong, Bishop says. Transfer David Hastings also looks like hell help us. The defensive front wall will be anchored by seasoned Ken Smith and Alema Teo. Transfers Dan Pederson and Wes Meir add size and muscle. Other talent will also challenge seriously for playing time. Unless hurt by injuries, the defensive line could become intimidating. Punter McComb returns, and place kicker Herkey Marxen will be back. We should be better because of the experience in our kicking game. Enough good people return from our specialty teams to give us optimism in those areas too, Bishop says. Dennis Wells should be one of the top return men in the area. Mike Wood, y Wyoming.
