Marty Harris, a junior psychologylanguage major from Portland, Ore , last week won the national championship in poetry interpretation He shares honors with jay Lane, who won the nation's top award in informative speaking for SUSC The college s team was second in the nation at the National Forensic Association National Individual Events tournament in San Diego Forensic squad takes national honors Two SUSC students win individual titles as team finishes second in country BY LISA JANE LAIRD SUSC's forensic squad came home with national team honors and two new national champions last week From a field of 120 schools, the team placed second in overall sweepstakes at the American Forensic Association-NationIndividual Events tournament held in San Diego Competing against larger teams from schools like Vanderbilt, Berkeley, Cornell and University of Southern California, SUSC's nine people competed in 27 events to take the Four-fohigh second place trophy "This is probably the finest team effort I've ever seen," said coach Sage Platt "Every student worked to be their best and to represent the college. The team managed to set quite a few school records while competing This is the first time the college has placed two champions, and more team members broke into final rounds than ever before, said squad member Cynthia Dewar Marty Harris, a senior psychology major, earned individual honors as first place speaker in poetry interpretation Senior Jay Lane earned first place honors for informative speaking At another national tournament, senior Pat Posada earned champion honors for dramatic interpretation and poetry Harris said that all of the team members contributed to the sweepstakes award through the individual points they earned "Without a total effort by all of the team members, we wouldn't have earned the trophy," he said |
