A person must keep good perspective on the future, Bishop explains. "When the contest is over if you win, you go on to the next chahenge, but if you lose, you still have to go on to the next challenge It's important to remember that youi best is all can be expected of you " He also notes that often times we let egos limit our progress "You are never as good as you think you are," he smiles, "but you are never as bad as they say you BY RUSSELL HYMAS Jack Bishop looks at football much as he looks at life. "Really what life is," says the Thunderbird head coach, "is a series of successes and failures. How well you do in life depends on how you react to each of those successes, and each of those failures " Bishop, who's back for a second stint as coach after a three year absence, stresses to his players that if you make everything a life and death are." The coach believes that football, as well as other athletics, is a great training ground for life and occupations. "Athletics, in itself, is like a job," he explains. "You don't always win, and you don't always have everything positive, but you always strive to be the best and woik hard." All of this helped Bishop as he grew up with sports in the small town of Delta, Utah. "Athletics, hunting, and fishing were all there was to do," he says Bishop was very active in football and wrestling during high school He placed second in the state wrestling championships and was part of a championship wrestling team Bishop has always been interested in coaching. "I've always wanted to coach athletics," he says. "Sports was my whole life when was growing up." He took his first coaching assignment in 1970 at Hurricane High School, and then moved on to Panguitch High bchool where he vas given the task of starting up the first football progam that Panguich has ever had. After various other coaching positions throughout the state, Bishop was hired on at SUSC as an assistant football coach He held this position for only a year before advancing to the role of head coach, a position he held for five seasons. Bishop comments this season has been very positive thusfar. "I'm very happy with this year's season as we've come into our first year of the NCAA," he says. "This is the toughest football schedule an SUSC football team has ever played. The defeat of Northern Arizona has to be the biggest victory in the history of the school." Bishop says the team's "only big disappointment" came with the loss to Cal State Sacramento at homecoming. coach believes that his team has The proven itself in a big way. "Our kids have represented the school, themselves, and the community extremely well," Bishop reports. "Most people picked us to finish 9 and last in the conference. have never had a more enjoyable I 2-- I lack Bishop is pleased with his team's success. WtW. WffffWl.HI.
