Show The Thunderbird VICA wins 18 medals at Utah Skill Olympics, take three state offices BY TYLER JENSEN SUSCs chapter of the Clubs of l America recently attended the Utah Skill Olympics and walked away with 18 medals, two students competing in nationals and three students elected into office for the state wide VICA. Adviser Kenneth Munford said SUSC had 21 students compete in leadership or skill areas. In the cabinet and millwork competition, Howard Hepworth won a gold medal and Alan Warnick won a silver. Ron Phillips won a bronze medal in carpentry. In electronic product servicing, Mike LeBaron won a silver medal and David Schoffstall won a bronze. David Gardner won a gold medal in graphic communicatons Alan Aldredge won a bronze medal in industrial electronics, and Rick Maurer won a bronze medal in machine drafting. In extemporaneous speaking, Forrest Eastman won a bronve medal. In the job interview competition, Robert Johnson won a silver medal. School attending were Brigam Young University, Utah Technical College of Provo, Utah Technical College of Salt Lake, Dixie College, Snow College and SUSC. Utah Summer Games to be held in Cedar BY ROBERT REID Cedar City is the site for the first annual Utah Summer 1986. Games, held on July SUSC and the city will be the permanent site of the games. 2-- The Utah Summer Games is sports festival patterned after the Olympics. Amateur athletes from all over Utah will compete. In 1984, people from Cedar City and SUSC founded the Utah Summer Games Foundation and started the games. The foundation is a corporation directed by a board of trustees. All staff and board members are nonpaid volunteers who contribute their time and a non-prof- it efforts. The games are designed to provide an athletic event for Utah amateur athletes, said central committee member, Vaughn McDonald. The activites begin on Junc-3with a torch relay. Utah Gov. Norman Bangerter will light a torch on the steps of the capitol building, where runners will carry the torch on a e route to Cedar City. Opening ceremonies for the games will be held on July 2 in the Centrum. Captain of the 300-mil- Page INTRODUCING prepared speech competition, and in the opening and closing team competition, SUSC won a bronze. On the team were Alan Alderdge, Lisa Gullace, Russ Guymon, Lisa Laird, Lynn Lauder, Charles Smith and Gary Wright. SUSC students Gardner and Hepworth will compete in the national competition in Phoenix, Az. Gardner will compete in graphic arts and Hepworth will compete in cabinets and millwork. SUSCs Robert Johnson was elected Utah state VICA president. Lynn Lauder was elected vice president and Gary Wright was elected parlimentarian. In the multiple section competition, SUSCs VICA won third place in the outstanding club category, Munford said. Monday April 21, 1986 1984 U.S.A. gymnastic team, Peter Vidmar, will serve as guest host for the ceremonies. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the days winners each evening in the Centrum. There will be 14 events for men and 13 events for women including basketball, bowling, cycling, fencing, horseshoes, shooting, and track and field. A cookout and closing ceremonies will take place on LJ JH if B July 5. This is the first and largest amateur athletic competition in the state of Utah. It will be a quality event, McDonald said. KSL-Twill provide coverage of the games. The games are financed through entrance fees, ticket revenues and private contributions. The major corporate sponsors of the games are SUSC, KSL Radio and Television, First Security Bank, Utah Power and Light Company, Intermountain Health Care Inc. and The Utah Beef Council. People interested can apply at Utah Power and Light or F;'st Security Bank. Most events require an entrance fee of $10 per person. Some events, however, require higher fees.
