Church. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Student Center took place on March 11, 1986. According to Church, the administration chose March 11 for the groundbreaking ceremony date because it is the same day as SUSCs historical Founders Day. The administration thought it would be appropriate and symbolic to have the groundbreaking ceremonies on Founders Day. Five weeks have passed since the initial ceremony, yet 87-8- 8 Students and faculty are concerned over delays in construction. Is this going to be another Centrum? asked one frustrated student. Church said the delay in construction is mainly centered on cost factors and the structural design of the days to building. It usually takes the architect make a decision on the structure type. We want to get the most building that we can get for a good cost. Weve done a lot of planning and, nevertheless, it takes time, he said. According to Church, the building is still in its planning stages there is no deadline. No contractor will be selected until the drawing is finalized. The company that designed the Centrum, Fowler, Ferguson, Kingston and Ruben, will design the new Student Center. According to Church, college officials are working closely with the architects to determine the actual design. We want to do this right the first time and not have said Church. iO make any corrections, Another element adding to the delay was the postponment of test results from the soil on which the new Student Center will stand. However, officials now say that they have received the results: The soil is fairly uniform. The soil under the Centrum was somewhat unstable creating a great delay in the construction schedule of that building. We wont have the problems with the new Student Center that we had with the Centrum, he said. The Centrum was a difficult project due to several reasons. The nature of the facility is different, the soils are different and concrete had to be poured all causing a tremendous delay in the construction time frame. The main concern about construction of the new Student Center now is the weather, said Church. Since construction doesnt start until the end of summer, the coming of winter could cause a minor delay. Our main priority is ending up with a building that we can be proud of and will meet our needs and that we can afford, said Church. We have a greater need to make good decisions, instead of concentrating on the has urgency to get the building built. One challenge for the the We building want to get been the financing. best price, rather than getting it built 46 soon. According to Church, SUSC administrators starred 1972 due to the planning fot a new Student Center in sudden increase in student enrollment. The existing Student Center holds only 600 people, yet student enrollment has increased by 500 percent since 1972. Church said that the school didnt build a new Student Center sooner because it never had enough funding. Officials say that the school now has the finances. Most of the funding for the $2.2 million new Student Center has come from student fees, the rent paid by the Bookstore and food services and from general funding, said Church. The building of the new Student Center will take place on the present site of the War Memorial Fieldhouse. The old Student Center will be turned over to the Division of Continuing Education, but will still be used by students and faculty. Officials say that the 35,000 square foot building will include a new, larger Bookstore, a cafeteria, a snack bar, meeting rooms, office space and a large interior lounge for student use. |
