V' dvl vv Braithwaite opens exhibits ART REVIEW BY PAIGE WHITE Two new exhibits, which opened at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery on April 3, have the feeling of the old West. One, by a distinguished and well known artist, John Mark Bangerter. The second, a senior art major, Anne Marie Nicholson. These two exhibits are a perfect combination. Bangerters collection is vibrant, bold and brassy. Colors which blend perfectly with Nicholsons soft shades and pale pastels. A striking painting in oils of contrasting blues and yellows greets you at the door of the gallery as you walk in. The painting, entitled Lisa and Ranee M organ captures the true essence of the modern day westerner. Bangerter favors using oils for his paintings and bronze for his sculpture. The most exciting of the two are the oils. Bangerter says, Sculptures and paintings are two different approaches to my subject. They complement one another. Understanding of the figure, motion, and the spirit of the West in three dimensional and sculpture gives understanding to my painting. I can feel the form and volume while I paint. Nicholsons work on the other hand strikes you as soft and delicate, with a flair all its own. When viewing Nicholsons work, you are immediately struck with the thought that the painter is linked with the '60s in some way. Her style echoes the design and texture of that period. However, one oil painting entitled Matches done in bright yellows, blues, and pinks suggests an attempt at more modern style. The contrast of this painting with the rest of Nicholsons w'ork clashes so violently that one is taken aback and made uncomfortable. Nicholson says about her work, With a Cubist analysis of such tablewares, I have taken the teapot to a point of abstraction that removes it from a functional category. In exaggerating the elements of the pieces a more whimsical and sculptural object results. Nicholson speaks about several pieces of ceramics featured in her portfolio. The teapot is indeed transformed, almost unrecognizable as a teapot. The colors and textures used are curiously appealing when seen in this form. Both exhibits can be seen until April 25. This is a fine exhibit and well worth a browse through the two adjoining Mark non-cred- it r Bangerters art and sculptures are currently on display in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery in the main gallery. galleries. Thanks for all the Fish is as good as Hitchhikers Guide BOOK REVIEW BY TYLER JENSEN In case you havent heard, Douglas Adams has a sequel out to all the other books in the Hitchhiker trilogy. This book is at least as funny as the first three. So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish picks up with Arthur Dent landing on Earth; the planet that was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Many of the old characters arent in this book. The prologue says why: ...One Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting in a cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, the Earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, and so the idea was lost, seemingly for ever. This is her story. is the story of the girl who was one of the jokes The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. This is just a sampling, there are many more strange characters. Its hard to tell the story of this book without getting of on one of the hilarious tangents.
