Show Page 4 Tie Tfiuiuferfiircf Motufiajy February 10, 1986 4 Students need some real student leaders Thunderbird believes that anyone with the .lightest interest in SUSC and the individual entities hereof should run for an office in student government. SUSC is facing many potential problems. Rising enrollment coupled with state funding cutbacks could lead SUSC into dire financial straits. The state legislature fails to see this, so students need representatives who will fight for their interests. Too often, elections are turned into popularity contests. This is something that shouldn't happen. The most popular person may have a great social life but will he or she be able to represent students whose funds depend on fair representation? This should be an election of issues; we're not in high school anymore! Money isn't the only issue students need to worry about, though. Apathy is something that officers have to answer to in part. When apathetic students are elected to office, their schools are left with less voices, as if it isn't hard enough to plead your case. These people are usually only interested in the social side of student government. These people should grow up. The student body officers and the senate need to know what the students want. Students should give feedback to the officers and senators, but if they don't something should be done. Student feedback should be actively solicited! The example of only 17 students answering to the student quartersemester survey shows that apathy is running through much of SUSC. Officers must be people that can find out what the majority is by taking a broad n of students and defining what the students Flu cross-sectio- want. If you are running, ask yourself if you are really qualified to represent your school or even yourself. If you aren't running, ask yourself if you could do a better job than those who are. If you don't feel qualified or motivated to run for an office, then vote. It's the easiest way to express your opinion. 0e Dm rider bird VOLUME 80, NUMBER 17 Editor Tvler lenten Copy Editor Reben.t Southern Photo Editor Derek Miller Sports Editor Ken Co Entertainment Editor Chad Mi (Vide Assistant to the Editors Aniutu (.booms Senior Staff Writers kns Johnson kon Kontouiunnu Production Manager Kelli Fo Advertising Designer Gavin McNeil Advertising Representative Kellie Jensen Faculty Adviser Larr Baker Casual conversations are useless Access is a recurring column open to students, unacquainted persons arrive at a given place on faculty, and administration.
