All-Stat- Search on for new coach (continued from page 1) ii The resignation comes as SUSC prepares to move into the highly competitive Western Football Conference next season. Sources inside the athletic council said members of that group, and other college administrators, were concerned the football team would be unable to effectively compete in the WFC without some changes, including a new coach. Officials say the search for a new head coach will begin immediately so there will be no delay in the important recruiting process. We cannot afford to delay our choice of a new coach, Lunt said. The move to the WFC is a definite step up in level of competition, and we need to do all we can to be competitive. The WFC includes California Lutheran University, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Sacramento, Portland State University, Santa Clara University and SUSC. College officials said the evaluation of the team, and of the coaching staff, was not based primarily on the won-los- s record. Moreover, officials said that a fight several weeks ago between members of the SUSC team and Mesas team was not a major factor in this investigation, though it may be a consideration. Prior to his appointment as EVERYBODY head coach in 1983, Conrad spent four years at SUSC as assistant coach, three of them as defensive coordinator for the team. He also had responsibility for recruitment of players. Until this year, when major sport coaches were put on an untenured basis, Conrad also had teaching responsibilities in the SUSC physical education department. As a linebacker for the SUSC team during his student days, Conrad lettered four years and was among the tackle leaders his junior and senior years. As a player he was named to the NAIA Seven team and was an player. He was team captain and was named outstanding player his senior year. reads the personals! |
