I like the quarter system because you get in and out; you dont experience the burnout. However, with the semester system, you learn a lot more and you get in depth, youre not so rushed. A student who voted in favor of the semester system replied, Im tired of rushedly going through our text. We either go to fast or dont have time to cover all the material needed, he said. According to a semesterquarter fact sheet distributed by Morman, some of the advantages the semester system offers are: Students could learn more with the semester schedule because learning retention increases with the length of time exposed to the subject. There is more time to complete learning objectives. Most texts are written for the longer semester and students would also be purchasing fewer textbooks. Students and teachers have reduced stress by having only two grading cycles per year rather than three. 64 percent of the colleges and universities nationwide are on the semester schedule. If SUSC switched, students wouldnt have the problems they have now when transfenng. However, the fact sheet also indicates students can also benefit by staying with the quarter system: With three fresh starts, there are three chances to do better and fewer chances of boredom and burnout. Students receive grades three times a year. More frequent evaluation of their academic progress promotes learning. Students have the opportunity to take a wider array of classes. Once the committee has all the necessary data and statistics from its study and surveys, it will send a report to the Utah State Board of Regents for its examination. After the reports are submitted, the board of regents will consider them and decide if Utahs system will be changed from a quarter-base- d system to a trimester with two regular semesters and a summer semester. This isnt going to happen overnight, it probably wont even happen next year, if the change does takes place, says Morman. Were all going to be leaving, but what we leave behind is whats going to last, and if we can really do something that betters the school in the long run, then I think thats the most important thing about this whole issue, he added.
