Show The 'Thunderbird Tuesday October hurt team No-sho- ws Small size and lack of experience are a pair of worries that are currently troubling SUSC Womens Volleyball Coach Joy Peterson. We probably have some of the best setters weve had in years, and our hitters look very promising, Peterson says. We are, however, a very young team and a relatively small team. Six upper classmen three seniors and three juniors are listed on the roster. Two of the six, Pat Roundy (6-- Jr., Delta) and Cathy Corry (5-Jr., Cedar City), were not members of last year s squad. The other four, however, played key roles on last seasons 0 team. Jill Reynolds (6-Jr., Salina) was a member of both the Mountain Athletic Conference and the District Seven teams. Jana Crawford (5-Sr., Draper) was among the teams top attackers; Sally (Gines) Salmans (5-- Sr., Kamas) was a regular starter and a strong backline player. Meridee Syme (5-Sr., Ogden) was a backup setter. All four of the upper class letter winners, plus sophomore Lisa LeDuc (5-Brigham City), who also lettered last season, were called upon early in the year to help in the maturing process for the younger players. We had an unusually large number of players who through accident, change of plans, or other assorted reasons simply didnt show up this year, Peterson said. "Because of that, we are going with a smaller (both in stature and in numbers) squad than we anticipated and planned for. The Thunderbirds, who have won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship for seven of the past eight seasons, may lose some in blocking because of the The other aspects of SUSCs game should remain strong. Top hitters on the squad are expected to include Reynolds and Crawford, along with freshman Kim Turley (5-Las Vegas). Salmans is a capable hitter, and several of the new players show good potential. Other freshmen who have secured a spot on the squad are Kaylyn Sonnenberg (5-Panaca, Nev.), Sondre Reese (5-Las Vegas), and Kerry McKeown (5-Las Vegas). The Thunderbird season began Sept. 6 and 7 at an RMAC tournament in Denver, Colo., where the team took second place. First home action will come on Oct. 8, when the lady Birds host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. SUSC has compiled a 5 overall record on the road and on neutral courts to date.
