For example, contrary to the feelings expressed in a recent study, the current and future teachers in the class unanimously favor the career ladders concept. They figure that most but not all problems with education in Utah are money related. Major problems they identify are lack of discipline because of a soft society, and concerns over lawsuits and confrontations as a result of daily interaction as teachers with students, parents, and administrators. They are also worried about their abilities in classroom management, but they shouldnt be, Carter said. The class was also unanimous in the opinion that outreach classes are more interesting than courses. Typical comments regular include I can relate better, Im more serious than before I was married and was so concerned with campus activities, This has been my own decision to attend, There is so much experience It is normal for members of college outreach classes, which are usually more diverse than classes taught on campus, to develop an unusual unity and a willingness to exchange feelings and ideas. At least thats the theory of Phillip C. Carter, 00 BUY 4 Southern Utah State dean of Continuing Education. It is that division which administers SUSCs outreach programs courses taught away non-mone- from the central campus location. Outreach has been offered in such locations as Richfield, Delta, St. George, Kanab, Tropic, Nephi, Panguitch, Hanksville, and Panaca, Nev. Quite often a genuine oneness develops, Carter says. Partly, I would say, it is a result of the wide variety of perspectives of outreach class members. We typically have people who have experienced many of lifes ups and downs mixed with youthful students who are idealistic, and they become willing to share each others strengths. A sample of the diversity of a typical outreach class is exhibited in an education course, Teaching Reading in Middle School, being taught by Carter Thursday evenings in St. George. Among the 16 students enrolled is a widowed mother of seven (Susan Hansen, Hurricane) who is completing a degree to become a teacher and on-camp- us Southern Utah State College is developing an increasingly prolific off campus identity . thus more independent. Also enrolled is veteran middle school teacher (Richard Condie, Washington) who holds a masters degree and is enhancing his education while qualifying for a lane change which will make him eligible for a salary increase. A Paiute mother of five (Karma Grayman, Shivwits Reservation) is a year away from graduation. She has taught in the Headstart program and loved the experience. She wants to teach for several years in the Washington County area before working among Indian children wherever possible. Sherrie Olson, St. George, is a more typical college student. The graduate of Dixie College expects to receive her bachelors degree in the spring of next year after missing winter quarter to give birth to her first child. She, along with her husband, is also enrolled fulltime in courses. regular SUSC A majority of the class members have completed college course work at institutions other than SUSC or Dixie College, which provides teaching space for the class. It is a little surprising to me that such a diverse to be shared among class members. All class members were worried over their ability to obtain a teaching job in a locale of their choice. Being older makes going to school easier, Hansen says. I really dont consider taking classes a hardship, and my children have adjusted to my schedule. Her five sons and two daughters, ages five through 14, make it necessary to start her day at 5:30 a.m. and study each night between eight and 10:30 p.m. She was widowed in 1983 when her husband drowned in an accident near Logandale, ld General Admission Free Donations Accepted on-camp- us y Nev. It is apparent to me that each member of the class is very serious about a career in education, , Carter says. It is important to them. Mrs. Hansen expresses the essence of that importance: Students in the seventh grade show an eagerness to learn, and students in the eighth grade act like they simply dont care about school. Id like to help sutdents through this volatile period of their lives.
