Not only did Thunderbird track star Jolene Fisher win the NAIA marathon championship last week in Michigan, but she broke the old record by more than six minutes and won by more than four minutes. Floor SUSC COMMENCEMENT PARTICIPANTS AND HONOREES 88th Commencement takes place this week The colleges 88th annual commencement exercises are set for Saturday, June 1, following the Firday night BaccalaureateVocational graduation program and pinning for nurses. The activities begin May 29 with a retirement banquet honoring Morgan J. Williams, an associate professor of sociology who joined the SUSC faculty in 1968. The event will be held at the home of President Gerald R. Sherratt and is by invitation. Several activities are slated for May 31. The first is a White Ceremony to honor the 21 graduates of the Weber State CollegeSUSCDixie College Cooperative Nursing program. Scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in the Adams Memorial Shakespeare Theatre, guest speakers are Dr. Max Rose, an associate professor of mathematics at Dixie College and DeaAnna Murray, unit manager for the surgical orthopedics floor at the Dixie Medical Center. The pinning ceremony will be held in the Thorley Recital Hall in case of inclement weather. A Presidents Reception will be held that afternoon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to honor SUSCs 1985 graduates, their families and friends of the college. President Sherratt will host the reception at his home, 331 West 200 South. Olympic gymnastics champion Peter Vidmar will deliver the BaccalaureateVocational Commencement address FridayVidmar will address SUSC graduates in ceremonies scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on the upper campus quadrangle. Certificates of vocational competency, associate of applied science and associate of science degrees will include the presentation of Distinguished Service Awards to SUSC Development Board member Christy B. Bradshaw, SUSC professor emeritus A.W. Stephenson, and St. George businessman and civic leader H. Bruce Stucki. - Susan L. Winn, Cedar City, will deliver the Outstanding Student address. Winn will receive a two-yeassociate degree in secretarial sciences and will graduate with a 3.9 grade point average. Brian Garry Graff, Cedar City, the Outstanding Scholar for the SUSC School of Sciences, will offer the opening prayer. The closing prayer will be given by Maria Das Gracas Goncalves, Ipapuato, Mexico, who is runner up to the SUSC valedictorian and to the Outstanding scholar for the SUSC School of Arts and Letters. Both students will receive their diplomas Saturday, Graff a bachelors degree in chemistry, Goncalves a bachelors degree in languages. After leading the United States mens team to its first gymnastics gold medal in history, Vidmar went on to win a silver medal in the narrowly missing the gold by .025 of a point to Japans Kpji Gushiken in the closest battle in Olympic history. He also won the Pommel Horse gold with a perfect 10 in the apparatus finals. In addition to his three Olympic medals, Vidmar has collected an impressive array of national and international titles. He has also built a reputation as a superb public speaker, and has appeared on innumerable television talk shows, variety shows, morning shows and sports programs. The SUSC speaker has a bachelors degree in economics from UCLA. He is a devout member of the LDS Church, and his work in civic and charitable affairs includes serving as honorary chairman of the American Cancer Society and American Lung Association Christmas Seals Program in Los Angeles. Vidmar replaces actor Dean Jones, who canceled last month due to a film commitment. Friday honorees include Stucki, who is a businessman and civic leader, originally from Santa Clara, Utah; Stephenson, a professor emeritus of business at SUSC who spent 30 years at SUSC; and Bradshaw, who is a member of the SUSC Development Board and a prominent business and civic leader of Cedar City. Both commencement and baccalaureate exercises will be held in the Cedar City High School gymnasium in case of inclement weather. Evan Galbraith, the U.S. ambassador to France, will deliver the commencement address Saturday morning. He will be awarded an honorary doctorate at the outdoor ceremony. Others receiving honorary doctorates include Cedar City business leader Elloyd T. Cedar City school teacher Zoe Marchant, long-tim- e Emanuel and Floor, director and executive vice Palmer, America. Triad of president Members of the SUSC Institutional Council will confer the honorary degrees" to this years distinguished group of honorees. Delivering the valedictory address will be Michael Chidester of Cedar City, who earned straight As through his years at SUSC and will attend law school following his graduation. He has a double major in English and languages, Spanish emphasis. The weekend activities include a baccalaureate buffet which begins at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Great Hall. Tickets are $6. A fried chicken box lunch will be served for $4 per person immediately following commencement on Saturday. The event is held on the Student Center Patio.
