Grand Canyon finished third at 635, just ahead of New Mexico Highlands. Southern Colorado took fifth as Western New Mexico finished in sixth place. Id like to say that great coaching was what brought us this far, SUSC golf coach Tom Kingsford joked. But Id have to attribute our success to the great golfers we have. The finished with top honors despite its number three golfer, Ken Mason, nursing a newly broken left thumb and team leader Stuart Adams having an off day. Adams finished tied for sixth place overall. It isnt just a one man effort. Its four or five guys working together, Kingsford said. The three other fellows contributed just enough to win. We cant always follow Stuart. He had an off day and still succeeded. Kingsford commended Mason for his play throughout the THE COLLEGE ARMS APARTMENTS ARE BEING COMPLETELY REMODELED! Left thumbs are very key important in the game of golf, said Kingsford. His score suffered badly in the district meet, but he showed considerable character to play it out. Now he is eligible to compete in the national meet, and he should be back near top form for that competition. district Mason shot a pair of 87s at the weather-shortene- d average of 76.95 going into tournament, well below his that meet. Ken is a tough, competitive golfer. He will help us in the national meet, and we figure that if he is 100 percent there is no reason why we shouldnt have as good a chance as anyone else to win that tournament, an optimistic Kingsford said. But with Adams and Mason struggling, the rest of the golf team took up the slack. Kris Abegglen came to form in the tourney, lighting the course on fire with a 152 score, only three strokes behind the medalist winner from Grand Canyon College. Jerry Ellefson and Allen Orchard totaled 160 and 159 respectively. We proved that we didnt have to rely on one ivdividual, Kingsford said. College golf is team golf where the four and five man have to contribute. Even though we won by only one stroke, its still a win, added Kingsford. The Birds were plagued by snow and wind throughout the tournament but Kingsford said the weather may have been an asset. We have been playing well in poor weather all year, Kingsford said. I hope we can do just as well in the nice weather at Phoenix.
