After four years it kind of Gary Mason and Colleen Hawkins were named Male and Female Athlete of the Year at SUSCs annual Athletic Awards Banquet conducted last week. Mason, a 190 pound fullback from Salt Lake Citys Judge Memorial High School, was also tops everything off by be selected, Mason said. The program has helped me quite a bit, football is a team sport, there are a lot of other players who helped me get that award. Hawkins, who transferred to SUSC from Western Wyoming two years ago, lettered in both volleyball and track, and was named this years outstanding athlete on both sports. As a hitter for the volleyball squad, Hawkins, from Timpview High School in Provo, contributed to the Lady Birds seventh consecutive Rocky named SUSCs outstanding football player of the year. As a letterman and starter for the Thunderbirds Mason was a major part of the teams four-ye- ar basketball, Doug Templeton in baseball, Will James in mens track, Stuart Adams in golf, Dave Webb in cross country, Gwen Thomas in womens basketball, Brenda Shaw in gymnastics and Jennifer Smith in softball. In addition to the outstanding athlete awards, Stuart Adams and Paula Burgoyne were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Mountain Athletic Conference crown last fall. Its a great honor to be selected, considering the other athletes that were up for the honor, especially Gwen Thomas and Jennifer Smith, Hawkins said. Also named outstanding athletes were: Shawn Daniels in Colleen Hawkins ASS' ' , Gary Mason Runner readies for marathon The annual Marine Corps Marathon to be held in November at Washington, D.C., will include a Southern Utah State College runner who will be representing the National Guard national team. John Pragle, a distance runner on the Thunderbird track team, qualified for the National Guard team by finishing 14th among National Guard entrants at a qualifying marathon last week at Lincoln, Neb. His time was 2:46.35, not a personal best, but under his 2:50. felt as good after that marathon as Ive ever felt, Pragle said. Its a different feeling, a good one, to finish a marathon, he added. hoped-fo- r I The Nebraska Marathon included teams from 49 states andor U.S. territories. The Utah team finished third among the 49 teams. Pragle finished second among the nine Utah runners and 33rd overall (the marathon included runners not affiliated with Guard Units). nine-memb- . F&a The Marine Corps marathon in November will pit teams from various branches of the armed services and will also be open to marathon runners from across the country. More than 10,000 runners are expected to compete. A lot of people go so it should be a challenge, Pragle said. Three hundred and twenty runners were entered last week in Nebraska.
